The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Generating XML file from Access data store
Tags: xml, access, file
Experts,

For a project I am working on, I need to be able t produce XML files populated from a MS Access data store.
For example:

<MODEL model_name="Example Model">
    <EMPLOYEE_COLLECTION>
        <EMPLOYEE employee_code="x"
            employee_first_name="Joe"
            employee_last_name="Blow"
            <ACTIVITY_PROFICIENCY_COLLECTION/>
            <TEAM_ASSIGNMENT_COLLECTION/>
            <CUSTOM_FIELD_COLLECTION/>
            <EMPLOYEE_CALENDAR>
                <EMPLOYEE_AVAILABILITY>
                    <RECURRENCE_PATTERN pattern_name="Scheduling">
                        <vevent>
                        <dtstart>39083.0</dtstart>
                            <duration>720</duration>
                            <description>Every 1 week(s)  Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 7:0 to 19:0</description>
                            <rrule>FREQ=WEEKLY;BYDAY=MO,TU,WE,TH,FR,SA;BYHOUR=7;BYMINUTE=0;</rrule>
                        </vevent>
                    </RECURRENCE_PATTERN>
                </EMPLOYEE_AVAILABILITY>
                <EMPLOYEE_OFFTIME/>
            </EMPLOYEE_CALENDAR>
        </EMPLOYEE>
    </EMPLOYEE_COLLECTION>
</MODEL>

(incomplete, of course!)

In the past, to do things like this, I have generally relied on creating ordered DAO or ADO recordsets,
stepping through the recordsets, and using TextStream objects to write the relevant lines to the XML
files I need.

My question here is, would I be better off trying to use one of the XML-centric libraries to do this?  If
so, can anyone give me some pointers on where to start?

I am not asking for anyone to do my project for me--I just need a shove in the right direction.

Cheers,

Patrick

For this you need a reference to Microsoft XML (this will work with 2.6 and up.)
Simple example showing how to build the xmldocument.  It's just to show you how to create nodes and attributes and save the results.

you can use the XML class in VS.
it has functions like createnote, create element, making life a little bit easier.

The advantages to using the MS XML library is that it ensures that you produce well formed XML, and you can use the same library to parse it back out.

Paul,

Thanks for that.  I will poke around with that for a bit :)
