The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Help with approach to take developing payroll application

I have a table that records the start and end day/time for employees at a small 24/7 business and need to calculate the overtime applicable.

Overtime is payable once an employee has worked more than 12 hours in any rolling 24 hour period and overtime rates continue until the employee has had a break of at least 10 hours, providing that after returning from a 10 hour break the employee has still not worked more than 12 hours in the preciding 24. An example of the input table is shown below. In this example the by 10 am Tuesday the employee has already worked over 12 hours in the preceding 24 hours and so from that time on would be on overtime rates until he has a 10 hour break (providing he does not work more than 12 hours in the 24 hours before or during that next shift. That being the case I need to split the record in my output table covering Shift 2 on Tuesday into two records, one from 6am to 10am and the other from 10am to 11am.

The only way I can think of is to work through a recordset containing the relevant records for an employee (though I am not sure at what point I start that recordset because I don't know when the 12 in 24 has been reset) . Then as I process each record in that recordset I need to keep looping forwards adding up the hours worked to calculate the 12 in 24, spliting and outputing records as I go, before proceeding to the next record in the input table and continuing to loop forwards again. I fear that will be a very slow process. Any suggestions on how I could approach this would be most welcome. If I recive multiple suggestions I will endeavour to split points for contribution as that seems the fairest approach.
