The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Access 2007 keeps "installing and configuring" every time I open an Access app
Tags: ms, office access, 2007
Like it says, really! Most times when I open Access or one of its apps, a dialog box comes up telling me that it is installing, configuring, etc... it. The app then opnes but the following problem appears:
My Access app's VB opens Word and this usually goes wrong with Word coming up invisibly but the whole app, Word and Access, hanging. This may not be relevant but I thought it might be related.
Any ideas?

Many thanks.

I would suggest doing a complete install of Office.  By default, it only installs the most used parts of the suite and the others are installed on first use.

Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
Find office 2007 and click Change
Choose Add/Remove Features
Click the small drop down box next to Office 2007 at the top
Choose "Run all from My Computer" and then continue.

Let me know if this solves the problem.

Thanks for that.
Sorry, I have already uninstalled the product. But not reinstalled yet.
Also, I was running the same app every time so I don't see why it should keep installing and configuring as no new feature is required every time, as far as I can see...

Do you have different versions of Access on the machine? If so, then if you "switch" between versions - i.e. you open 2003, then open 2007 - this install dialog will appear. There is no fix for this particular behavior (although supposedly the Office 2007 SP1 makes the switch shorter, but I've not been able to see it).

Does this include switching between Access 2007 in Office and 2002 as runtime?

I'd assume so, since the runtime is nothing more than Retail Access with the design features removed (and a few other bits). It's entirely possible for a runtime version of Access to "register" itself as the default application to be used for Access files.

Many developers who are in your situation either (a) run a separate machine with the runtime installed ONLY or (b) use some sort of "virutalizing" software, like Virtual PC (which is FREE) or vmWare - note that you still must have licensing for the OS and such that you install on any virtual machine ... so if you do run VPC or vmWare, make sure you have an extra license for XP Pro, 2000 etc

You're going to love this!
Now that I have reinstalled Office 2007, when I start up Access 2007, it does the install and configure as before but now it fails with:

Error 2711. An internal error has occured.
      (ACCESSNonBootFiles                   )

... the it tries to repair and then, when this is finished, and try Access agaian, it fails identically...

I have just noticed that it is actually trying to configure runtime 2007! when this occurs!

That's always encouraging ;)

Do you have the 2007 runtime installed on this machine? Just curious ...

Hate to say it, but time for (again) and uninstall of Access ... then reinstall. If I'm not mistaken, MS has guidelines for completely removing the Office components somewhere ... I'll have to see if I can dig it up if you need it (or you might be able to find it via your favorite search engine).

LSM...
I have uninstalled my runtime application and runtime 2002, leaving just Office 2007 - I'd be interested to see if you can dig up the info you mention in your latest.

Many thanks,

Hi Peter,

I looked around and couldn't find anything specific to 2007 ... found methods to completely remove 2002 and 2003, but nothing for 07.

You might try an installer cleaner:

Ok, all. I am going to use Vms for my development  and testing installations so problem will go away. LSMconsulting, thanks for your efforts!
