hide fields based on another field in a report

Hello.
I have been asked to hid a field in a report when it has no data.
whether I hide this field or not depends on another field on the same report.
I have tried conditional formatting to no success
I have been able to develop this expression
-------------------
If VarType(Vno) > 6 Then
[COF_Date].Visible = False
Else
[COF_Date].Visible = True
End If
-------------------
But run into a problem, this seems only to work on Page 1
As I scroll through the report the action doesn't apply to subsequent pages, guessing that comes from where I placed the expression in the 'On Page' field.
Is what I need to achieve possible or should I reconsider running the report differently say from a control on a form that sets the visible properties before it is previewed.
