The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

DCount And Left Join
Tags: VB.NET, Ms-Access Jet
I do not understand the definition on domain in DCOUNT(Exp,Domain,Criteria). Microsoft write that Domain can be a table or a query name. Can some body give an example there not is a table?

In my case I am struckling with DCOUNT on 2 tables eg. A and B joined on "Number".
Select DISTINCT DCOUNT('PPre','(A LEFT JOIN B ON A.Number=B.Number)','PPre=False AND B.Test=1') AS EXP1

Usage:

Dcount("[SomeFieldName]","[SomeTableOrQueryName]","<SomeOptionalCriteria>")

SomeTableOrQueryName   .... is the Domain.

That's not how the domain aggregates work.  The "domain" has to be either a table or a saved query;
AFAIK you cannot pass a SQL string as the domain argument.

But why use a domain aggregate function at all, when it seems that you can get what you need with
a simple SQL statement?

DCOUNT('PPre','(A LEFT JOIN B ON A.Number=B.Number)',

You can't do that.  The Domain parameter must be the Name of a Table or a save Query.

Ok, I understand i think, a Query is a form of virtual table there is made before the DCOUNT call.  In the example with table A and B, I shall make a Table C before calling DCount?

NeDall,

No need to make a new table necessarily, but you would want to create a query, and then use that
query name as the domain argument.

However, as I stated above, it may not even be necessary to use DCount at all if we can get a
properly structured SQL statement.  What is it that you're trying to accomplish?

Patrick

In the program (vb.20005.net) where this DCOUNT is used, the are a lot of group statistics on one table (A), but one of the group statistics will the call also include the table B. In pratic, the record set in table A, can be ordered in folders or departments there are listed in table B, linked by the record set id.

eg.  Select * from (A left join B on A.PNO=PNO) WHERE B.FolderID=235, gives all the record set in the Folder with the FolderID=235.  All the record set haves many different scores eg. S1 to S30, and the program shall count the number of record set with the different values.

I know that the following is an error, but it explains the problem well I think.
Eg. SELECT DISTINCT DCOUNT('PPre',' A left join B on A.PNO=PNO ', 'S1=0 AND B.FolderID=235') AS expr1

OR

SELECT DISTINCT DCOUNT('PPre',' Select * from (A left join B on A.PNO=PNO) WHERE B.FolderID=235', 'S1=0') AS expr1

One of my problems is that I do not know what a query is yeat. I can not find an example on a query in vb.2005.net terms.

03.27.2008 at 07:06PM PDT, ID: 21227504
Ok. Now I know what a query is. The MS Access I use is not in English. I will translate the word used for query back to "request" in my MS-Access.  Sow if I use Select * from (A left join B on A.PNO=B.PNO)  as  my new query and saved it as qC  the  SELECT DISTINCT DCOUNT('PPre','qC', 'S1=0 AND B.FolderID=235') AS expr1  will work fine.  But still, I am using it in a VB.2005.NET application.  Do the solution about require that the user of the program also have MS-Access installed?

"Do the solution about require that the user of the program also have MS-Access installed?"

No - if you are only extracting data from the MDB ...and no one actually needs to open it.

NeDall,

Click on the "Report Abuse" link i your original question.  Use that link whenever you need Moderator
attention, not just for "abuse".

In your explanation, just say that you want to reopen the question for the purpose of splitting the
points.
