Open Form Command Button from a Tabbed Form (Subform) problems keeping association & Populating

I have a tabbed form with subforms (other forms dragged onto the tab) and the main form and tabbed subform are linked to the same record ID. I would like to add command buttons on the subform tab to take the viewer to another form where more specific detail can be added. The problem I am having is getting the new form that is called by the command button to open for the active record and add new defining data associated with that same record (bound to Record_ID). Can this be done and how should the properties be established? The example is for a person (Main Form) who has indicated that they smoke on the (tab subform) and we want to now add more detail in the Command Button Called tobacco use form).
