Remove period from column headers during Excel import

Asked by JazCat in Microsoft Access Database, SQL Query Syntax, Access Coding/Macros

I import an Excel file directly into my Access 2007 database.  Some of the column headers in the file use a ".", that is a period, and so do not import into Access.  I have written a macro in Excel to strip these off before importing but that means downloading the file, opening it, running the macro, saving the file and then being able to run the rest of the commands in Access instead of being able to push a button and have Access do all the dirty work.

I am working on getting the owner of the Excel file to remove the periods but that might take a while. Is there a way to strip these from the spreadsheet before importing to Access. I actually import multiple worksheets from this Excel file, 11 of the worksheets have the periods, but all in different places.  An example of the header is MM3.exe - Revision.Start Free Trial
