The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Form requery doesn't work every time

Hello,

I have a button on my form to add a new record and I'm using the form.requery to update the recordsource of the form, which is based on a query, and display the newly added record. The record is added as supposed but the problem I have is that the requery part doesn't refresh on every click. I can click 5 times before it refreshes and sometimes only once...

I've tried to redefine the recordsource too, still not working. Here's the bit of code involved

rs.Open "SELECT MAX(TBL_CLIENTS.No_Dossier) AS MaxNoDossier FROM TBL_CLIENTS", con

newDossier = rs!MaxNoDossier + 1

rs1.Open "INSERT INTO TBL_CLIENTS (No_Dossier) Values(" & newDossier & ")", con

Form_RQ_FRM_CLIENTS.Requery

What is the actual Record Source for the form?  Can you post the SQL?

mx

05.03.2008 at 02:43PM PDT, ID: 21493782
Here it is:

SELECT TBL_CLIENTS.no_dossier
FROM TBL_CLIENTS
GROUP BY TBL_CLIENTS.no_dossier
HAVING (((TBL_CLIENTS.no_dossier) Is Not Null))
ORDER BY TBL_CLIENTS.no_dossier DESC;

If I run the query manually after I click the add button, I see the new record...

So, you are basically executing an Append query, then wanting to see that new record on the form, right?

Yes, that's it.

ok. Well, you add the record and do a requery, but ... I don't see that there is any guarantee that the record just added is going to appear on the form, unless you filter the form with the ID (or primary key) of the record added ... if you see what I mean.

Is this form bound to a record source?

A couple of points to mention.

Firstly - you're using a recordset to execute an action SQL statement.  (In this case an INSERT).
While ADO allows you to do this (it returns an unopened recordset) whereas by comparison DAO will not (it'll tell you off in no uncertain terms) - it's not good practice.
If you want to use ADO to perform your insert - use the connection object directly.
i.e.
con.Execute "INSERT INTO TBL_CLIENTS (No_Dossier) Values(" & newDossier & ")"

Secondly - you're using an ADO method to insert the record.  Your form is very likely bound to a DAO recordset.
The connection of the former can cache updates and commit them to disk at intervals to improve performance (well - to technically improve performance, even though it's interfering with your attempts).
I'd recommend either using a DAO method to insert the row
e.g.
CurrentDb.Execute "INSERT INTO TBL_CLIENTS (No_Dossier) Values(" & newDossier & ")"
or equally a recordset method - though it can't be through the form's own recordsetclone as I would have suggested - as it's an aggregate query that is bound to your form.
Or you'll need to flush that ADO cache to expediate the write and see the results on your form.
Markus and I alone must have posted the JRO flush method a gazzillion times by now lol.
Well there you have it - upon a search of EE for "RefreshCache", I get one of Markus' posts first.  So be it ( ;-).

So, what exactly was the solution ?

I just changed this line of code:

rs1.Open "INSERT INTO TBL_CLIENTS (No_Dossier) Values(" & newDossier & ")", con

For this one:

CurrentDB.execute "INSERT INTO TBL_CLIENTS (No_Dossier) Values(" & newDossier & ")"
