The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

yes/no field properties not replicated in a make table query
Tags: microsoft, access, 2003
I have a make table query that is based on two tables one of which has a yes/no column it it. This column is in my new table as well. When i run the query the yes/no column loses it's DisplayControl property and all the yes's turn into -1''s and all the No's become 0's. Now i can change the DisplayControl property within the Query Builder to make that column in the new table a yes/no column, and the data stays the same, the problem is, i am running this query through VBA, and whenever i run i get the 0's and -1's. I assume the Query Builder has some built in functions that the VBA doesn't perform. I've looked through the posts on EE and tried to adapt the code i found but haven't had any luck with it so far.

Attached is the VBA for what i have so far which runs the query great, Any help would be greatly appreciate. This whole Property appending and creating is confusing me.

>When i run the query the yes/no column loses it's DisplayControl property and all the yes's turn into -1''s and all the No's become 0's.
This is by design.  Access Yes/No fields actually have stored values of -1 for Yes/True/On and 0 for No/False/Off.

If you reeeealllyyyy want 'Yes' and 'No, then instead of SELECT YourValue, use SELECT Iif(YourValue=-1,'Yes', iif(YourValue=0, 'No', NULL))

05.08.2008 at 02:31PM PDT, ID: 21528651
Yes, i understand that. But a -1 or a 0 doesn't do my end user very much good, so my question is how can i translate that back into a yes/no or a checkbox?

>But a -1 or a 0 doesn't do my end user very much good,
Agreed.  Most developers do not let users look at raw table data, instead we connect the data to forms or reports that can have various controls like option groups/buttons and combo boxes that can display Yes or No.

I see you already have the code to manipulate properties. Try this after the table is created:

SetFieldProperty CurrentDb("[FE_ File Extensions by Categories]")("Included"), "DisplayControl", dbInteger, acCheckBox

This will show a check box for the field "Included".

Thanks Harfang, that worked great! So I understand, I just need to Call the SetFieldProperty function then tell it which database to use (CurrentDb), which table ("FE_File Extensions by Categories"), which field ("Included"), which property ("DisplayControl"), the value type, and then the value? So that's i how can change any property for a given Field within a table? And if i simply get rid of the Field portion and only reference the database and the table, then i can change the properties of the table? Is that correct?

05.09.2008 at 01:47PM PDT, ID: 21536311

Rank: Genius

Yes, that is correct. You already did so to set the Description of your table, it works the same for all other DAO properties. If you need to study a new property or set of properties (let's say you want to define a combo for a field), create one through the interface, and examine the properties that have been created (see the snippet).

As Jim explained, they are all "non-essential", meaning that they are never used in a standard application. For example, your users will not open the table directly, but see the data through a query or a form. However, they are sometimes useful for the developer, especially when creating forms and queries. For example, I like to put more readable column / field names in the Caption property.

Cheers!

Harfang, how do i use the code you provided? I pasted it into my module but can't figure out how to run it?

The last sample prints out to the immediate window (Ctrl+G). To run it, type things like this followed by the enter key:

    ListProperties CurrentDb("Table1")
    ListProperties Forms(0)
    ListProperties CurrentDb("Table1")(0)

Thanks and good luck!
