query getting mismatch in criterea error in ms access

I have a query that uses an expresion Replace([Part#],"-OSP","") AS PartNo in a query. When i try to add a criterea to the expression I get a "data type mismatch in criterea expression" error.  I want to make a decison on PartNO - can this not be done
