Database window Not Visible in Access 97
I hope someone can help me with this.
I was just contacted by a client that's using an app that uses Access 97 as a back end. The front end app is a compiled application.
Someone on site did "something" and now, when you launch the back end file, the 97 database window is no longer visible. In fact it doesn't even appear as if a database is open. But a lock file is created when you open the file. And the lock file disappears when you close it.
I imported all the data, which did in fact exist, into a new clean 97 database and rename the new table to the name the front end app is looking for. Everything worked fine. Then the user started getting error messages about entry being required. And so we had to go back to the old app. the one with no database window. And their front end works fine.
Holding the shift key down doesn't seem to do anything. F11, F12 nothing.
Any ideas??? It's been a long time since I used 97 and I don't remember the ins and outs.
Thanks,
E

ckick Windows, Unhide and select the mdb name
If you can get to the menu bar try Windows - Unhide
Open the buck end with shift bypass. Press F11 . Goto tools, startup. Check the Display database window checkbox.
add an autoexec macro that opens a message box that says " you don't have Access to this database! and then closes it. That way users would have a harder time screwing it up. (The shift bypass will get past the macro).

Did you try to press the shift key and keep it pressed while opening the database?

Hi all, thanks for your comments.
I've tried all things suggested. I've tried bypassing the start up by holding the shift key down. I've tried F11. I've tried looking at start up under tools. I've tried unhiding the window.
Nothing seems to work and still no database window. Even the menu items that would appear don't appear. Yet, when the front end is loaded a lock appears. When it closes the lock disappears. When I import to another Access 97 db, I can import all the tables and the queries.
This is pretty bizarre and frustrating. Any other ideas???

Are you opening it with the runtime version instead of the full version of Access? If you are double clicking the mdb/mde and default program has changed to the runtime version this could happen. Open Access 97 first then open the mdb.
"When I import to another Access 97 db, I can import all the tables and the queries."
So, isn't that the solution? I was just going to suggest that.

Hi Jeff: OK, you've peaked my interest - what do you use to make your 'cartoons? I understand the screen capture, but the text balloons?

Thanks again,

Ray,
I copy the screenshot to MS Word and add the Text Ballons from the Drawing Toolbar.
The I take a screenshot of that, and paste to MS Paint and save as a jpg.
I could probably buy a screen capture progarm that does this though...

Hi guys, my client has been on vacation so haven't had a chance to deal with this. If nothing happens soon I'll distribute the points.
That would be great if I could read your hand-writing ;-)
I give!

Hi guys, sorry to sound so mysterious on this. Here's the situation. This was a one time questions from the company that subcontracts me out. I was asked to see if I could help. I used this forum to try and get some ideas to this puzzling questions. Most of the suggestions on this thread I had tried but to no avail. Then, when I called the client back to continue the process, I kept getting voice mail without returned calls. so I considered the issue dead.
That's the story.

Yes. That much did happen.
Anyway, upon inquiring about how to handle these issues on this forum I was told by a moderator to NEVER award points unless I've gotten a clear answer and resolution.
Thanks,
E

That is correct.
The reason is that many people search here, and if you "Accept" a post that is not an answer, it will be confusing to them.
