Generally it is a timeout that causes this. You can increase the timeout value of the passthrough query (setting it to 0 will disable the timeout for the query) in query properties.
If your using the version 8.x or up Oracle ODBC driver, you can uncheck the Enable Query Timeout box through ODBC control panel to disable all timeouts.
