How do I get scanning software to communicate with HP LaserJet M1120n MFP?

I am using Windows vista.  Just purchased the above mentioned multifunction printer.  Most of the features work just fine.  I can print from my computer.  I can photocopy documents directly from the printer console.  However, I cannot scan documents from my computer.  The software included with the printer includes an application called "Scan to".  When I run that application, it searches and comes back saying that it cannot communicate with the scanner.  Originally, I had the MFP connected through my little home network.  I though perhaps that some netwrk problem was causing the issue so I uninstalled the printer software and connected it directly to my laptop through USB then reinstalled the software.  Same result.  The software says that it cannot communicate with the printer.

In control panel, the Scanners and Cameras applet sees the MFP and reports that it is in 'ready' state. Pressing the 'test scanner' button under diagnostics returns the message - 'Your imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test' .  The printer also included a CD for ReadIris Pro 11, an OCR application.  It also is unable to communicate with the scanner.

I could take the scanner back to the store, but I would like to try and resolve the problem first and hopefully not have to take that step.  Problem is, I called HP to try and get some support.  I spent around 2 hours (2 seperate occasions) on the phone getting passed around to different agents without finding anyone who could give me some support.  I finally asked to be put through to a manager and when he started to ask me all the same questions (name, phone number etc), I interuppted and calmly explained what had happened and that I wanted to confirm I'd get some help before spelling my name out for the 100th time.  He just hung up on me.

Anyways, if anyone could provide me with some help or point me in the right direction, I'd very much appreciate it.  I couldn't find anything on the HP website that addressed this issue.

Thanks for the reply.  No, scanning through Paint doesn't work either.  Clicked File - from scanner or camera (the title of the box says 'scan using HP Laserjet M1120n MFP') and then chose to scan a text document.  Paint kept searching for a scanner but returned the message 'Paint cannot read this file.  Not a valid bitmap file or format is not supported.'
in scanner section of control panel, does the scanner show?
and in device manager?  no error there?
can you make an off-line copy?
Yes, it shows up in Control Panel and it says the device is ready.  Shows up in device manager with no errors.  I can make copies directly at the printer console by pressing the scan button.
Well, that was it.  Updated the firmware and bang ... scanning works just fine.  I feel like an idiot for not trying that earlier.  Thanks for your patience and running me through those steps.
