The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I want to write a program to run on Windows. Where do I start?

Asked by swatgear in Microsoft Programming, Microsoft Visual C#.Net, .Net Editors & IDEs

Hello,

I know that the title of my question is really terrible and it probably sounds like I'm not capable of writing a program but I do have a small background in C/C++ and have written several web applications in PHP. So I don't really know much about pointers and memory management or how to prevent a buffer overflow but I do know about integers and floats and loops and sorting algorithms. In other words, I'm capable of learning.

Here's what I know/think:

1. I will use the .NET framework as the foundation of my program.
2. C# is probably the language I will be using.
3. I need an editor and something to compile my program.

With the above in mind, here are my questions.

1. What version do I go with? Do I start with 2.0 or 3.0? Or 3.5?
2. Is there an SDK that I need to download or is the SDK a part of the "consumer" version of .NET?
3. Is C# really the language I should get my feet wet with or should I stick with C/C++?
4. Do I have to use Visual Studio Standard? What about Visual Studio Express? What features does Express lack that Visual Studio Standard has?
5. Are there other options for editors and compilers other than Visual Studio?

I'm a network administrator and I've found myself lacking the ability to write programs to perform automated tasks that would make my job easier so I'd like to work towards doing that.

I've been researching this for a little while and I'm hoping to find my answers soon. In the meantime I'd like to get some feedback from the community.

Thanks,
