Problem importing xls using import wizard

Hello Folks:
I am using the wizard to import an xls. There are 4 fields in the xls. One of the fields contains Alphanumerics, as well as just numerics as data in teh column. When the table is imported, it will not convert the alphanumeric data from that column, just the pure numerics. I formatted the column as text, tried importing the data into an existing table with that field defined as text, and still it converts those values to 0. Any ideas?
