DVD locks up WIN2k machine (AMD dual core / asrock 939 dual mobo)

well, without paying cash, I can't find out if this is PAQ...

So.  I have 2 dvd drives.  Both are on IDE chan. 2.
I can run Nero Drivespeed to test the drives, I can read and write files, but if I try to rip or burn a DVD, the computer freezes.

PC= AMDx2-4800, ASROCK 939 dual MoBo.
IDE 1 = 300gb Maxtor IDE drive
Boot Disk = SATAII (master 3)
OS = Win2k

This unit was working fine until recently.  I installed AnyDVD upgrade, and sudden 'lockups' began.

Removed anyDVD, and the same problem continues.

Can't even burn a CD now, without the computer locking up.

I've deleted the drives, and the IDE controller driver, let windows re-install, and nothing....
