Question

This disk structure is corrupted and unreadable

Asked by: ItSecurePro

Hello. I have been working on an HP Pavilion ze4145 laptop (XP Home SP2). I first received this message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of
0Xc0000005 (0X00000000 0X00000000).
the system has been shut down.

So I booted this laptop with the 6 floppy disks and ran chkdsk. I had to use an external USB floppy drive.
Everything seemed okay. I was only able to  run windows in safe mode. So I decided to re-load the OS, but once I try to access the D:\ drive I get the message: This disk structure is corrupted and unreadable. So I assumed the CD Drive was bad. So I swapped it out with a good working CD drive from another HP laptop. Same message.

Does anyone have a solution on to re-load the OS or how to salvage this laptop w/o replacing the motherboard?

  Hi ItSecurePro
You booted from floppies, so D may be RAM drive. Try E or F. Better boot from CD (choose external USB device in boot sequence options in BIOS)

Regards

Check the disk if you have goback installed, and remove it if so. The UBCD4WIN has both a goback checker and a goback removal tool. After that check the disk with the manufacturer's utility, and use it to repair it if necessary. You'll find that tool on the UBCD.

I'd also run chkdsk again. Do that with the UBCD4WIN mentioned above, and let it repair any errors.

The STOP 0xC000021A error occurs when either Winlogon.exe or Csrss.exe fails. When the Windows NT kernel detects that either of these processes has stopped, it stops the system and raises the STOP 0xC000021A error. This error may have several causes.

Among them are the following:
"      Mismatched system files have been installed.
"      A Service Pack installation has failed.
"      A backup program that is used to restore a hard disk did not correctly restore files that may have been in use.
"      An incompatible third-party program has been installed.

a good strong format will probably resolve this issue and of course fresh install, i have found that somehow mbr's, corrupt partitions, cross linked files from previous incarnations have tendency to be at the root of of most of these types of errors, using the disk mfg's format tool usually gets you up an going and the table set for a good fresh reinstall.

Thank you everyone for your help. I cannot do a fresh install without buying an external CDROM drive to connect to the USB port on the laptop, since the laptop won't read any CDs from the current CDROM drive. I cannot build a Ultimate boot CD because I only have a OEM OS CD which gives an error when performing the build.

Hello Everyone - I am still trying to do a fresh install of Win XP Home Edition on this laptop. I tied to run the system restore wizard in safe mode and received: System Restore is not able to protect your computer, Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore Again. I can only boot this laptop in safemode and I cannot access the CDROM drive (d) -  This disk structure is corrupted and unreadable. I have a flashdrive with Win XP Home Edition but the laptop will not recognize the flashdrive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do a clean install?

Get an XP CD and make the ubcd4win. You should also test your hardware (memory, HD etc) using the ubcd. For the UBCD you don't require any windows CD. Replace the CD drive with one that works.

Well the build for the UBCD did not work with the Win XP Home Ed CD (OEM) I have. It gave me 2 errors and I do not know how to fix the errors during the build. Also I already swapped out the CD-ROM drive with another and I still received the same error. Any other alternatives?

The UBCD doesn't require windows. You'll find many testing utilities on it. For the UBCD4Win you probably need a fukk XP version, not OEM. But it also looks like your OEM CD is bad, so you may have to get a new copy anyway.

Go to your local computer shop, purchase a laptop hd to 3.5 hd converter, slave the laptops hard drive to a pc with this, boot to the cd, install xp on the laptop drive, be sure to format good, not quick.

Well, I tried to transfer the driver for the BIOS and CDROM from another computer via a crossover serial port cable, but during the file transfer wizard the laptop did not recognize the serial port. So now I cannot access any drives or ports on this laptop to re-load the OS or try to reload the CDROM driver to get the CDROM to work in order to re-load the OS.....

Thanks to Paul I have another route to take. Like you said, remove the laptop's hardrive and connect it with the converter to another PC, the format and re-load the OS. QUESTION - If there is a major BIOS error the newly formatted and re-loaded drive will still not startup once put back in the laptop, right? Although the drive might be good.....I will still have the hardware issues (BIOS, CDROM drive)....right?
