Question

"No compatible CD recorder found" - Lost burning capabilities

Asked by: chermesh

Hi,
My system (Lenovo M55e desktop, WinXP Pro (SP3)) lost its burning capabilities both for its permanently DVD drive and my USB connected DVD drive.
I checked the net for solutions, but all answers (HD failure, obselete software, cable connections) seem to be irrelevant. The hardware related causes my explain a single drive problem, but not my two drive system.
I'm not sure what events preceding the appearance of the problem are relevant, but let me mention two:
1. A trojan attack which required the use of ComboFix and the use of online BitDefender checkout.
2. My efforts to raise security by disabling autorun capabilities. by using the following registry change:
"REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf]
@="@SYS:DoesNotExist""
The change was suggested in the following link:
http://www.windowssecrets.com/comp/071108#story1

I've uninstalled my DVD drive and let the system reinstall it, but the problem stayed unsolved. I unplugged the USB DVD drive, with no effects.
What would you suggest me to do?

What program are you using to burn CDs/DVDs?  Are you just using the built in Windows Burning solution??  You may check to see if burning is enabled on the drives.  Go to Start > My Computer > Right Click on the DVD drive > click properties > click Recording Tab > Make sure CD Burning check box is checked.  Then restart.  Try it again.  If you're using another program then post back and let us know.

Good Luck HTH.

Also look into this:

a problem with the existence of "upper and lower filters" can make the drives inoperable:
 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

Getting rid of it in the registry is the fix.

Open regedit and find the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Class\\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Right click in the upper and lower filter entries in these keys and press delete.
Reboot and check if it is OK now.

Or download this and run it:

To kadafitcd:
I'm not using the built in Windows Burning solution and therefore, I guess, I see no "Recording Tab".
I'm using Ashampoo's Burning Studio 8, but I tried other applications as well (direct burn from Windows Media Player, ImgBurn, etc.). All show the same response.

To coral47:
I checked my registry and found no filter related keys in the specified addresses. To be on the safe side, I ran the recommended application. Its log says it clear:
Filter Check & Removal Tool v4.6
--------------------------------
27/01/2009, 14:50:07

Lowerfilter Scan results:
No LowerFilters found.

Upperfilter Scan results:
No UpperFilters found.

So, back to square one.

Ok if it's not showing a Recording tab then you need to go and try the steps listed in This Microsoft KB article..

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529

After this you may need to reinstall your burning software but hopefully it will work without the reinstall.  Good Luck HTH.

To kadafitcd:
Thanks.
I followed the KB's instructions and indeed found an error since I myself made. The value for my DVD drive was 3 instead of a 1. I changed it, but other than an addedd "DVD" icon on the properties window of the drive nothing change. (Let me make myself clear: I've located this MS KB document prior to posting on this forum. The value I found was, as needed, "1". Mistakably, I changed it into "3". Since nothing happened, and my problem stayed unchanged, I forgot to reset the value. So, thanks for reminding me to reset it, but other than that, I still can't burn on my system).

So much for the easy stuff.
I think you will have to do a Repair or a Reinstall, but try to test the drive in another system first. And/or another drive in this one, just to check for hardware problems.

Do you have a XP disk, or a Lenovo Recovery disk?
If a XP disk, you should be able to try a Repair.
If a Recovery disk, it probably will not let you do anything but wipe and Reinstall.

Hi,
Today, while trying your most recent suggestion I recalled that the drive was replace a few weeks ago by a Lenovo mechanic. The drive was then tested on READING capability and found ok. IT WAS NOT TESTED FOR WRITING CAPABILITIES!! Since this replacement, I had no need for burning.
Therefore, I suspect that that my problem stems from an incomplete drive installation. I'm waiting for a home visit of a technician. I;ll report to the forum on the outcome of the visit.
Meanwhile, please don't send any suggestions.

I know you said you didn't want any suggestions but you should switch that value in the registry from a 1 to a 2.

My problem is going to be saved, and with a surprising end. As I mentioned, my CD drive had a minor hardware problem. Since the computer is still under Lenovo guarantee, their technician replace it with a "better and more updated" drive. Well, the drive was more updated, but it had much more restricted capabilities, no burning, only reading. This issue was dealt satisfactorily by the Lenovo customer service, and my drive is going to be replaced next week' this time, I hope, with a read/write capabilites.
Thanks for the suggestions, including the last by kadafitcd:. ( don't care about a 1 or 2 as a parameter, since I don't use rewritable media).

Lenovo tech:
Well we fixed your broke CD burner by replacing it with a better non-burning CD Rom. Surprise!!    : )

If it were me, I'd start by removing the CD from the Device list and let Windows detect it again and install drivers.

On Control Panel, run System, Select Hardware, then the Device Manager Tab

Find the DVD/CD list then highlight the drive, and push the DEL key to remove it.

Now reboot to let Windows reinstall the drivers for it.

JT92677,
If it were an os problem, then your suggestion would work. In my case, it was a hardware problem, and therefore, only hardware replacement fit.

How will replacing the built-in drive address the problem with the USB external drive that you described? When you wrote "...and my USB connected DVD drive." it sort of ruled out the hardware, didn't it?

When the drive is replaced, I'd bet that while they have your laptop, that they'll fix the driver(s) and if the resulting system works, you'll never know if it's the hardware or driver.

If you had described the problem as follows: "... my USB external drive works fine, but the internal drive does not" that would have pointed to a hardware-only problem.

The reference to the USB external drive not working was sort of a red herring <<grin>>

JT92677 , Your comment sounds correct and I don't know what to say. My request for help was posted a very long time ago, it was solved by the replacement of the DVD drive, and I can't recall further information to satisfy your puzzle. Sorry, but that's the way it is.
Thanks for the efforts.
Please treat this discussion as closed.

I thought this was still unresolved, ooops. My mistake.

Okay on the solution, I assume the external USB reader/writer was fixed in the process as well.
