Question

USB Flash Disk Device Unrecognized

Asked by: jamie_bennett

Hi experts, hope you can solve this one for me.I have a PC running Win XP Sp3 that has suddenly stopped being able to recognise USB flash disks and HDDs.I've checked the USB ports, and keyboards etc seem to work fine. The USB flash disk in question in recognised in another PC without any errors (Even ran scandisk on it to check it wasn't faulty) . I've used the flash disk on this PC before and no problems (It contains backup info, which frustratinly makes me unable to restore the PC to a previous working state easily). I've tried to use sytem rerstore but t no avail, and deleted all the USB devices in the hardware manager Although none of them pertained to the USB drive in question. I've tried the USB Drive in another port as well, but same error. Any thoughts?

Try running SFC /SCANNOW from run. That will check all windows file verstion ect and replace if not there. I can take a very long time.

hmm, slight problem there. the PC in question has no optical drives, when I run the system file check it asks for the windows CD, is there a way I can point it to a network drive?

by: SysExpertPosted on 2009-02-26 at 13:55:15ID: 23750356

I would also ceck the disk manager and Device manager to see if the drive shows up and may need to have a letter assigned.

I hope this helps !

Sadly device shows up in neither... well it does show up in the hardware manager as "unknown device"

here some ideas :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196

OR :
Remove all USB drivers with:     http://www.ee-stuff.com/Expert/Upload/getFile.php?fid=6853      ---> Now reboot and test.
Delete the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" registry values from:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

you can also reset the usb :
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\WINDOWS\inf\usbstor.inf
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\WINDOWS\inf\usb.inf
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\WINDOWS\inf\usbport.inf
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\WINDOWS\inf\usbprint.inf

OR :
Download devcon :  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272
then run :   devcon enable @usb\*

nobus,

\i tried the first suggestion on your list, sadly it didn't work, however it's now created a different problem. I have a dynamic drive made up of 2 disks (Each of which is a hardware raid) that has now become 2 logical disks D and E (Each blank) and one dynamic disk (F) which contains all my data, any idea how to get this back to one drive? The disk manager can't see the D and E drives, and wont allow me to reassign the drive letters :-(

by: nobusPosted on 2009-02-27 at 03:53:48ID: 23754794

>>   the first suggestion on your list  <<   which one?   not sure; anyhow, i do not see why it should intervene with your non usb devices...
as for the dynamic disk - i s uggest to backup everything and reinstall as you like.
any reason for the dynamic disk?

by: jamie_bennettPosted on 2009-02-27 at 04:41:34ID: 23755074

Tried the MS Knowledgebase article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196

Dynamic disk is for ease of use on my part, I use it to store video files over a 2TB array of 8 250Gb disks.

Any idas on what caused this additional problem and how to fix it?

by: nobusPosted on 2009-02-27 at 07:32:13ID: 23756465

so you changed the registry ? you can set it back very easily if you did make a backup, as shown in the article
a system restor ecan help too

by: jamie_bennettPosted on 2009-02-28 at 00:36:33ID: 23762588

Yeah edited the registry as per the article. sadly I didn't make a backup (And there odly seems to be no system restore points)... lssson learnt... I'll be backing up in future ;-(

by: nobusPosted on 2009-02-28 at 00:45:59ID: 23762619

if it still works ok (beside the drive letter problem) you can use it like this.
the only other option i see is abckup all the data (ouch) and start from scratch the setup
maybe this can help (making or expanding  a dynamic volume) :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308424
but i would never dare touching partitions without backup....

by: spetePosted on 2009-02-28 at 21:27:29ID: 23766978

Flash drives use the E letter by default. If the E drive was taken, the usb flash drive would not have worked. It is possible to change the drive letter on the usb drive. Other pcs may have had the e drive unused. Different jump drive manufacturers have formating processes that are required to format their drives and change the letters. Check the site of the manufacturer of your jump drive for software that will help and/or explain what the options are with your jump drive.

spete,

drive was previously recognised on this pc as E:, it now no longer shows up in either the hardware manager or the disk manager. It dooes however show up on another PC as B:, and a 3rd as F:

did you remenber, or note the changes you made in  regedit? you can try putting them back..but take a backup of the registry first !

by: dbruntonPosted on 2009-03-01 at 00:19:20ID: 23767358

Can you get hold of some other flash drives - different manufacturers if possible - and try them in this machine?

by: jamie_bennettPosted on 2009-03-01 at 05:32:56ID: 23768073

Yes I have tried it with several different manufacturers and even a USB HDD. However I get the same problem, these drives however work on other PCs

by: dbruntonPosted on 2009-03-01 at 23:08:54ID: 23772065

All right.  Here are some links to look at.  I don't know if they've been posted before.  I've only done a quick scan.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823732

This builds on the one before

by: SysExpertPosted on 2009-03-02 at 20:17:42ID: 23780851

Could be a hardware isue with the USB controller.
I would try using an add in USB card to see if that works OK ( $20 ebay or tigerdirect.com )

I hope this helps !

by: spetePosted on 2009-03-03 at 15:13:30ID: 23790059

There may be two separate issues here.
One is the pc not mounting the usb correctly, any usb drive. If the driver for usb drives for  your OS has been deleted or damaged, the pc might try to mount it as something else - B drive( used for the second floppy in a two floppy system - a loooong time ago). Putting in  your OS disk and plugging in one of the more functional usb drives might prompt the os to install the drivers needed.

Then,  the fact that this usb drive won't work on other pcs could be from corruption of an on disk parameter. Using the formatting tools from the manufacturer might fix this.

If you get the pc to recognize other usb drives, you can use that one and ship the offending one to the manufacturer to figure out.

Hmm, good idea, but how do I then re-enable it?

SysExpert

It has a PCI expansion card already, and that is not working either :-(

nobus

Tried your other post and sadly no joy.

Spete

The device does work fine in other PCs, it is only this one that throws up the "Unrecognized device" error.

-----

I've managed to fix the drive letter problem with the Dynamic Drive now and have the PC back to it's previous state, hence the absence.

On a side note I have now discovered that the PC in question will not work with a USB printer (Co-incedentally it has a USB port and Card reader on it). Interestingly though it is still working with a USB keyboard and Mouse, both running through A USB KVM switch.

-----

Thanks for your help so far guys. I hope we can crack this mystery.

by: dbruntonPosted on 2009-03-15 at 03:01:56ID: 23890419

>> Hmm, good idea, but how do I then re-enable it?

Check first to see if the drives have been disabled.  If they have been disabled then they can be reenabled by reversing what has been done.

by: jamie_bennettPosted on 2009-03-15 at 03:15:02ID: 23890444

Hmm value is set to 3 (To disable the KB article says set it to 4) is this right?

by: dbruntonPosted on 2009-03-15 at 03:32:14ID: 23890480

Yep.

So with 3 it should be running.

Hmm.  You're getting "Unrecognized device error" for this flash disk and other disks?  So it knows something's getting connected.

by: jamie_bennettPosted on 2009-03-15 at 03:58:03ID: 23890538

Yeah that's exactly what I get... every time I attempt to connect a Storage device (Stick or HDD) I get a "Unrecognized device error" so it know's theres a UBS device, just not what to do with it :-(

Any ideas?

by: dbruntonPosted on 2009-03-15 at 04:05:56ID: 23890557

Or is it this error

"USB Device Not Recognized"

by: jamie_bennettPosted on 2009-03-15 at 04:28:00ID: 23890630

Sorry is indeed "USB Device Not Recognized" see screen grab

by: dbruntonPosted on 2009-03-15 at 05:01:07ID: 23890729

Two links to look at and carefully consider.  Be careful with the advice on the second link.  I'm not sure if it quite applies in this case.  Got to go to bed now, sorry.

Tried your link to http://www.hat.net/geeky/node/221

It worked :-)

Here's the section I used:

Remove Hidden Devices

1. Click Start. Click Run. Type cmd and press OK.
2. Type set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=13 (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
3. Type set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=13 (without quotation marks) and Press Enter.
4. Type start devmgmt.msc (without quotation marks) and click press Enter.
5. Click View. Click Show hidden devices.
6. Click + to expand Imaging devices, Unknown devices and USB devices.
7. Are there any USB devices and unknown devices (including grayed out devices)? If so, please right click it and click Uninstall.

Removed all devices that weren't connected (To be doubly sure), rebooted, and it sucessfully installed the driver and displayed the disk :-)

Thanks for your help.
