Have you tried disabling USB2.0 in the BIOS?
Are you using a USB 2 certified cable to connect the device?
Upgrade the BIOS firmware? WARNING can turn your mainboard into an expensive frisbee if there is glitch during the flash process
Download the latest mainboard drivers.
The device is connected directly, not via a hub?
The front of the server is usb1.0 and the rear is usb2.0. I have hooked up a diffirent model maxtor 1tb and it works fine. It is just this certain model. It is almost like something in the registry is messed up. Yes I have rebooted the server as well. In device manager it shows up as unreconized device. I did look at mskb 925196, i exported the registry key and deleted the upper filters and the device did show up just fine, but it messed up the drive letters and totaled made havoc for the sbs server and had to put the registry key back in.
I do have a support call into microsoft about this.
Okay worked with Microsoft, No help at all. They remoted in and looked at the issue and actually showed her what was happing. Told her it used to work but know does not. She said need to update the bios of the IBM server. I did so and rebooted the server it actually saw the drive this time and I was in hopes it was fixed. Next morning checked the back and could not log into the server. needed to be activated could not find the license. Called them back and went on-site. Had to power off the server and boot safe mode. It took about 50 minutes and right when it seemes it was coming up it rebooted and this time when it came up in normal mode I could log in. Checked the event viewer system and had nothing but ntfs errors since I rebooted the day before. Drive was not reconized. We will be swappng out the external usb drives for another brand that seem to work.
What has hapened to Microsoft? When I called in the partner area and did get a call back the person had a heavy India accent, and seem to have a hard time understanding me and I was having issues understanding her.
What a waste of time and effort. Thanks for everybody's help.
In some ways I feel it is better to buy a standard SATA 1Tb drive, stick it in a cheapo caddy and then you will have a lot more confidence that data can be recovered if there are USB issues such as this. Not what you want to hear when you've shelled out already, but the reliability of these devices to get your data back is a v important consideration.

Right click on My Computer, choose Manage, choose Storage, Disk Management. Does the drive appear there?
