Question

Windows 7- ATI radeon mobility 7500 - cannot extend desktop to external monitor

Asked by: swb_mct

My Thinkpad uses an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 adaptor.  Extending the desktop to an attached monitor always worked with XP but not so with Windows 7.

The only Windows 7 driver for this adaptor is provided by Microsoft . . the lenovo web site says this itself and ATI has no drivers on its site for this adaptor.

The Lenova Windows 7 update utility does not include a new display driver.

The attached monitor does duplicated the built-in screen, but does not show as a second display in the GUI, so it cant be adjusted separately for screen res or as an extended desktop.

One thing I really like about Windows 7 is a program called Display Switch

C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe

If allows uses to choose whether or not to duplicate, extend, Show only one monitor, and show only the other one.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks but DiplaySwitch.exe only works if the driver recognizes that is has a second display attached.  My display properties only show 1 display, even though the external display is attached and showing the same thing as the built-in display.

Yes, I tried the "Detect" button.  It did not produce the empty place-holder that is shown on your system in the grahic above.  The driver provided by Microsoft does not recognize the existence of the external VGA connection on the Thinkpad so the second display features in Windows 7 do not exist.

I did manage to force the installation of ATI drivers for Windows XP by selecting "Update Drivers" in the device manager and pointing to the folder "C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DISPLAY\Driver\2KXP_INF" that is created when you unpack unpacked the XP file "1rd637ww.exe" available on the Lenovo site.   The XP driver does not support the Aero transparency features and also leaves some of the desktop Icons a little Jaggy, but the external VGA port is recognized and the external diplay works.

The normal Setup.exe for the ATI XP drivers does not work because Windows 7 blocks the installation with the message that its "Default VGA driver" is the best driver.

I wonder if Microsoft will ever fix the Windows 7 Default VGA driver to support an external display on a notebook ?
