Which OS are you running and is it 32-bit-or 64-bit?
I would recommend downloading the windows update agent manually from http://support.microsoft.c
It shouldn't happen again as it was proabably just a glitch in the windows update agent that was cleared up by re-installing it. If you do continue to have this issue then we would need to look at what is causing the problem. If it does happen again in the future and you want to try to install the latest windows update agent just go to http://support.microsoft.c
Are you using Vista or XP?
The next thing I would try is to download the latest Service Pack (SP3 for XP and SP1 for Vista) and install it manually if it is not already installed. You can check if it is by going to Start Menu and right-clicking on Computer or My Computer and selecting properties from the menu. In the windows somewhere it will say what Operating System is installed and whether a Service Pack is installed.

I have read that this is common when there are driver issues. If you right-click Computer in the Start Menu and click Manage then in the Computer Management window click on Device Manager under the System Tools heading. If there is anything with a question mark or exclamation mark on them you should fix these by downloading the necessary drivers then try again.
Hope this helps.
