Ok, it affects Outlook 2003/2007.

Not fixed but I know the cause of the problem.
The NDR is generated by our server, but only after trying to forward the email to a smart host.
I did disable AV, but it made no difference.
I then created an smtp connector with the address space set for my domain (I am an external consultant) and sent email with docx attachments. These arrived ok. Sending to all other domains resulted in the NDR.
We are in contact with the administrators of the smart host and they are investigating, but as far as I am concerned the cause of the problem has been identified and this question has been resolved.
