by any chance are you using Antigen on the server?
I had faced a similar issue couple of months back with .docx and .pptx files and the problem was in Antigen

HI,

No, just basic SBS2003 Standard.
We are using Trend as our AV.

Hi,

I have set the recipient filter as instructed and am testing now.
However, I only get the 3030 NDR in the event log, and the problem seems to only have happened with docx files (not sure if anyone has sent any other 2007 type files).

by: demazterPosted on 2009-07-24 at 04:53:45ID: 24933943

Sorry I misread your post.
It's got something to do with a virus/spam scanner on your exchange server.

Do you have an SMTP scanner as part of your AV?

by: endoscopyunitPosted on 2009-07-24 at 04:58:24ID: 24933961

Yes, Trend Worry Free.
I have checked the content filtering, but it appears to be off.

Ok do you have all the updates on your exchange server?
What service pack for exchange do you have?

by: endoscopyunitPosted on 2009-07-24 at 05:08:45ID: 24934023

SP2 and patched.
I am running mbsa now to confirm there are no missing patches.
We use Trend with other sites - no prob.
Ok, Server is fully patched except for IE8 not installed and ..NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

And all trend OS updates?

by: endoscopyunitPosted on 2009-07-24 at 05:19:02ID: 24934098

Trend Version: 5.0

Build: 1417

This is due to be upgraded.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-07-24 at 05:24:41ID: 24934133

It might be worth uninstalling it or disabling it completely to see if this stops the NDR's or bring forward the upgrade.

by: endoscopyunitPosted on 2009-07-24 at 05:27:45ID: 24934150

I will need to arrange the upgrade for next week.
I can't switch - don't want to! - off the scanner.
Just investigating if it only affects Outlook 2003 clients... 1 person has Outlook 2007.

by: endoscopyunitPosted on 2009-07-27 at 08:02:45ID: 24952289

Ok, it affects Outlook 2003/2007.
We have upgraded Trend to Worry-Free Business Security Advanced 6.0 and we still get the problem:

Haven't contacted Trend 'cos we only upgraded this morning and tested an hour or so ago.
I'll check the link out later.
thanks

Sorry for delay in responding -
I have arranged to attend site. I will dis the server from the Internet and disable the AV.
This will probably be next Thurs 27th Aug.
I will update after that.

by: endoscopyunitPosted on 2009-08-27 at 05:58:18ID: 25197463

Not fixed but I know the cause of the problem.
The NDR is generated by our server, but only after trying to forward the email to a smart host.
I did disable AV, but it made no difference.
I then created an smtp connector with the address space set for my domain (I am an external consultant) and sent email with docx attachments. These arrived ok. Sending to all other domains resulted in the NDR.

We are in contact with the administrators of the smart host and they are investigating, but as far as I am concerned the cause of the problem has been identified and this question has been resolved.
