Question

xserve 10.5.8, windows domain users can't access shares

Asked by: Coldnorth

Hello
setup:
xserver running 10.5.8
server 2003, domain server
since the OS update from apple the ability to connect to the server using it name instead of it's IP has stopped working

the pc's in the domain and Mac's can no longer log into the server using it's name
using the IP is works fine for both platforms

On Xserve the Directory Utility is stating that the Open directory server is responding normaly
and that the active directory is binded and operating normaly.

so any ideas

Thank you

Is your DNS functioning properly?

Who's DNS are you using? Windows, Apple or other?

Can you on your mac perform on Apple dig <serverName> or on Windows nslookup <serverName>

What results do you get?

by: roylongPosted on 2009-09-19 at 08:04:28ID: 25373250

Are you using the full qualified domain name (FQDN)?

if you are not, try using it and see what you get.

Go to macintosh Terminal and type nslookup servername.domain.com
does his work?

If yes then go to Finder and select Go (menu) and Connect to Server..  type in SMB:\\servername.domain.com - Connect

does that work?

If you are needing to use just the server name instead of FQDN then you need to ensure your search domains are either added in through the macintosh network system preference OR auto populated from your DNS server.

I am using DNS from SBS server 2003

this server is called exchange  so it's full name is exchange.hayden, local

Using dig and nslookup resolves the name to ip properly
so dig exchange  -> got answer: 192.168.0.216
same for nslookup

and from the xserve smb://exchange  resolves
but I am requested to authenticate which  should'nt happen since the xserve is a domain member?

That is normal unless you have configured Kerberos Single Sign On. Have you done that?

by: ColdnorthPosted on 2009-09-20 at 08:38:42ID: 25377605

kerberos is stopped
The xserve should be a Open Directory Master, correct?

I am trying to find the section to set it up in 10.5 with no luck

by: nappy_dPosted on 2009-09-20 at 09:56:23ID: 25377865

In order for kerberos to function dns needs to be healthy. Is it?

Your xServe needs to have a dns A record. Does it?

by: ColdnorthPosted on 2009-09-21 at 05:32:59ID: 25382212

DNS is not running on the Xserve since I am using the DNS from the server 2003
on the server 2003 there is an A record for the xserve.

Do i require DNS running on the xserve?
How can I link it's dns to the one on the server 2003?

thsnk you

so let me clarify something - in your original question you said that via IP address it work fine?  Is this the case for the authentication too - i.e. your further comments say you cannot get your clients auto-authenticated - presumably the clients (even using IP address) cannot auto-authenticate?

Are your client machines bound into the AD as well as the XServe?

by: ColdnorthPosted on 2009-09-21 at 06:46:35ID: 25382764

the pc clients can connect to the xserve using the IP address without being required to type in their Username/password ( because guest access is enalbed on the shares as a workaround).

When using the name of the xserve, Domain users are required to type in their username/password after this the shares are available

by: nappy_dPosted on 2009-09-21 at 07:10:57ID: 25382984

This is normal by design.  An Apple server doesn not know how to accept NTLM information from a Windows computer.

However, if you were to bind the Windows computer to the xServe's OD infrastructure you may have better luck with Single Sign On(SSO).

In order for you do any of this, you need to get Kerberos working properly.

On your xServe, the only DNS server entry should be the server on your network that maintains your DNS records.  Is it?

by: roylongPosted on 2009-09-21 at 08:12:05ID: 25383712

If your OD (Open Directory) apple server is bound into the AD correctly then you should be able to get this to work.  The Apple server does know how to deal with windows clients (I presume when you say 10.5.8 this IS the server version of the OS?)  This version os the server OS is set up with much better Windows domain and client support.  Have you configured everything through the Server Admin tools?  The Windows settings on the xserve and the user and groups AD settings through Workgroup Manager?  Can you set the privileges on the file shares from the Workgroup Manager (WM) using the AD credentials - i.e. logged in with Domain Admin to the WM?

I am not sure if this would work - as I have not tested it.  But I believe if you bind the XServe into the AD without making it an Open Directory Master, you could then use the WM tool to assign your privileges from the bound AD domain with nothing else available... ...but, again, not tested this option.

Then you might find that the AD users can access the file shares correctly.

The other option is to fudge the SAMBA implementation on the XServe and hand code some of the configuration files outside of the OS X admin tools - but that starts getting a bit more complicated as you have to make sure that the OS X tool and configs don't overwrite your manual settings.  Its how we used to do it before proper AD support in OS X, but its not easy.

All answers help me realize that i will have to wipe and reload.
At present guest access is enabled and the users can access the xserve by IP.
I'll plan a weekend fun and enjoyment to reload

thank you
