BizTalk 2006 - Using xpath - Invalid Token

I am using xpath function as follows:
customerId = xpath(MsgShipNotification, "string(/*[local-name()='CustomerId') and namespace-uri()='http://CGX.SystemsExchange.Schema.ShipmentNotificationRequest'");

My XML is:
<Customer xmlns="http://abc.def.efg.Request">
  <AgentID>1234</AgentID>
  <AgentDisplayName>abc def</AgentDisplayName>
  <BusinessID>1</BusinessID>
  <BusinessRefID>4</BusinessRefID>
  <OpCoID>1</OpCoID>
  <CustomerId>GREAT</CustomerId>
  <CustomerValueType>Code</CustomerValueType>
</Customer>

I am using the xpath within a BizTalk 2006 orchestration, which throws an excetion - Token is invalid.

Please let me know what am I missing here?

square bracket is missing near the end of the XPAth

I tried with xpath(MsgShipNotification, "string(/*[local-name()='CustomerId') and namespace-uri()='http://CGX.SystemsExchange.Schema.ShipmentNotificationRequest']");
no change....still get Invalid token error.

However, I did try using xpath(MsgShipNotification, "//CustomerId");, seemed to work, but did not get any value, returns null, where as the XML does have a value.

That is no surprise, because CustomerId is in a namespace

can you try
xpath(MsgShipNotification, "//*[local-name() = 'CustomerId']");,

After having tried everything, I did this, which worked:
1. Promote the node / attribute in the schema which you want to get
2. It places a xpath in the xml schema
3. Use that path in the xpath function.
