The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Domain Controller DNS not resolving external queries behind ISA Firewall

Tags: Microsoft, ISA Server, 2006, DNS
I have a Domain Controller set up as the primary DNS for the clients internally. The DNS is set to forward requests to the external ISP's DNS servers. The DC seems to not be able to resolve external DNS. No ISA client is installed on the server.

Can your DC communicate directly with the ISP's DNS servers?  If not, you should create some rules within your ISA Server to allow your DNS servers to be able to communicate TCP and UDP to port 53 of your ISP's DNS servers.

You can test this from your DC by going into a command prompt and typing NSLOOKUP www.google.co.uk a.b.c.d  where a.b.c.d is the IP address(es) of your ISP's DNS server.  That will make the DNS server perform a name lookup directly to the external DNS server, which is pretty much what the forwarder will do.

02.19.2008 at 08:46AM PST, ID: 20930043
open the udp port 53 on the outgoing and incoming between you internal and external isp dns server on the isa server and thats it done

Ill double check the rules on the ISA
As of now I have two DNS rules
Allow DNS from Domin controller to External
Allow DNS Local Host to Internal

02.19.2008 at 09:05AM PST, ID: 20930244
I also added a new rule that DNS is allowed from anywhere to anywhere with the same result

02.19.2008 at 09:28AM PST, ID: 20930499
How does the forwarder know to hand off  the forwarded packets to the ISA server? Im willing to bet if I installed the ISA client on the server it would start working and resolving. Im not gunna install an ISA client on a DC/DNS tho

02.19.2008 at 09:56AM PST, ID: 20930759

Rank: Genius

As per my last on your previous question. ISA firewall client on a server is a non-starter so don't even consider it.

The forwarders do not hand off to ISA, they direct traffic 'through' ISA (assumning ISA is installed as a firewall system rather than just proxy) to the IP addresses you have set in the forwarders tab in DNS manager on the DNS server.

I assume your DNS server is set to use itself for dns queries?  ire the dns server has its own ip address set in the DNS parts of the nic settings?

02.19.2008 at 10:43AM PST, ID: 20931263
Yeah
Server is looking at it self as primary DNS as its a DC
Forwarders are set up in DNS as the ISP DNS servers

So for the DC/DNS ist
ip - 146.1.55.99
mask 255.255.0.0
Gate 146.1.0.175
DNS 146.1.55.99

ISA internal 146.1.55.117
mask 255.255.0.0
no gate
dns 146.1.55.99

As for how its installed...It both proxy and firewall I believe.

02.19.2008 at 10:46AM PST, ID: 20931285

Rank: Master

Look into either port 53 udp / tcp is blocked or there is no reverse lookup for your dns server ip address.

02.19.2008 at 11:10AM PST, ID: 20931501

Rank: Genius

Hang on here a minute. The default gateway of the DNS box should be the IP of the ISA server

ie
The dns server g/way should be 146.1.55.117. If it is not, then ISA is not even seeing your dns queries as they are being sent to 146.1.0.175, the DNS servers current g/way.

02.19.2008 at 11:14AM PST, ID: 20931536
Hmmm..That is the main router between all of our sites..Let me check into that, do some testing and see what becomes of it.

02.19.2008 at 11:16AM PST, ID: 20931555

Rank: Genius

Change the gateway as I suggest
From a cmd prompt,

Use a route -p add 146.1.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 146.1.0.175

02.19.2008 at 11:18AM PST, ID: 20931572

Rank: Genius

This tells the dns box to send anything for the 146.1.0.0 network to your router as it always has done. Anything else that the dns box can't deal with (including your dns requests to ISP's etc) will go to the ISA box as that is now the d/gateway

02.19.2008 at 11:21AM PST, ID: 20931597
Well..When I change the IP of the gateway to the ISA...things resolve, albeit very slow for a 3mb circuit. Feels like a dial up...Second..the Domain controller can no longer ping  internal resources so let me ask around.

02.19.2008 at 11:26AM PST, ID: 20931638

Rank: Genius

Can you still resolve internal machines?

Sounds like you need to check your internal config to make sure we have added the right address(es) here etc but this is the nub of your issue. You are telling ISA to allow DNS but are not telling the DNS box to use ISA as its exit path to carry out the name resolution. Therefore the dns server is actually sending the dns requests to the router - not ISA. Only you know your internal network though :) so only you can add the correct network route command.

02.19.2008 at 11:44AM PST, ID: 20931824
yeah..heres a quick overview of how its set up

http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/2249/tehnetworkun9.jpg

If I change the gateway on 146.1.55.99. I cant see anything on the 146.3 or 146.5 subnet. Also...since there are domain controllers on there thats a problem. Another thing is that the domin controller in question still doenst seem to actually resolve anyithing. I ran the nslookup command again as above and got the same result.

02.19.2008 at 11:49AM PST, ID: 20931869

Rank: Genius

No, you wouldn't expect to, would you, as that first route add we did was just 146.1.0.0 you need to add the additional routes that are available through that router that you mention above....

route -p add 146.1.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 146.1.0.175
route -p add 146.2.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 146.1.0.175
route -p add 146.3.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 146.1.0.175
etc

If you have used the WHOLE 146.x.y.z range in your internal network (woohoo wacky) then you can summarise the command to
route -p add 146.0.0.0 mask 255.0.0.0 146.1.0.175

o man...I didnt ask for those addresses they came with teh job..no idea why they used those. Ill try and see what happens

02.19.2008 at 12:09PM PST, ID: 20932055

Rank: Genius

lol - I think we should be done here. If there are other subnets that are accessible through this main router, they will also need to be added with a route -p add blah blah blah.

Bottomn line though - your dns did not work because you weren't sending the requests to the Internet :)

and you have changed the gateway on that dns server back to the ISA internal noic? You said you could resolve just now, albeit slow.

That command above tells me that your dns server is set to query 65.106.1.196 for name resolution. we know that your dns server is 146.1.55.99. so this is the SERVER ip address you should get from the nslookup. Have you messed with the other settings?

02.20.2008 at 07:42AM PST, ID: 20938815
No..I just ran
nslookup www.google.com 65.106.1.196
that Ip is our isp DNS. When I run nslookup from the domain controller I get no resolution. Im about to call microsoft

Yeah, I chaged the gateway to the ISA server and am able to browse web pages but anytype of nslookup stuff is failing miserably on the domain controller

02.20.2008 at 07:49AM PST, ID: 20938885
