The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

ISA Proxy authentication toi capture usernames instead of ip addresses.
Tags: microsoft, isa, 2006, proxy authentication
i'm running ISA 2006 with GFI WebMonitor. My problem is that when the server is set as the clients proxy, sometimes it captures ip addresses instead of usernames. I read that i can take care of this by selecting the properties of my internal network, going to web proxy tab, clicking authentication button, and selecting the checkbox "require all users to authenticate" BUT this gives me a prompt that says

"Requiring all users to authenticate may block traffic to sites, such as Windows Update, that do not support user authentication. To ensure that you do not unintentionally block traffic to such sites, we recommend enforcing user authentication on firewall policy access rules and publishing rules, instead of selecting this check box."

i'm not sure that i have to do becuase i dont see a way to enable this by the firewall if i'm even suppose to do that. I want to proxy users through this server and capture username but i also want to enable windows update etc. What do I do? and How can i enable access if the server is unavailable?

By the way, the clients are XP SP2 and Vista Business. Is this an issue for them or maybe just older clients?

Sounds like you have the 'all users' authentication set in the ISA rule. If so, that is not an error, it is by design.

Yes i have all users but what would be the solution to my problem?

Hi there,

What you would want to do in this situation is have a seperate Access Rule for your windows update that is higher up the list than your user internet access you have set to authenticated. Dont do the authentication at the web proxy level do it at the access rule level. As Keith says you will currently have your internet access rule set to 'All Users' group change this to 'Authenticated Users'

For the access rule you want to create a domain name set and add the following to that group

*.download.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Then create an access rule above the internet access rule and setup as follows

Allow       HTTP            From: Internal(Or WSUS Server)     To: Windows Update Group     Group: 'All Users'
               HTTPS

That should allow windows update to still connect aswell as general users to be authenticated for web access.

Steve
