The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to increase Internet browsing speed for ISA Server 2006?

Tags: Microsoft, ISA Server 2006, Version: 5.0.5721.240, Installed on Server 2003 SP2
I'm fairly new to the ISA world and have encountered a problem that I can not seem to find an answer for.  This organization is a school with 200 PC's on the network.  I had ISA Server 2004 installed on Server 2003 SP2 and it seemed to work fine.  I upgraded to ISA Server 2006, got the OK message after the upgrade, but now our Internet browsing is extremely slow.  Usually it times out with an error message that there are too many concurrent connections.  I've increased the connections for Flood Mitigation and have even disabled it, but no luck.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,

Are the same firewall rules in place? Has there been any changes to the proxy settings etc that may not be updated on the clients etc?

Regards
Steve

Mr Mandrson,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, all of the same firewall rules were upgraded from ISA 2004 to ISA 2006.  I've even tried to rearrange the order so the Internet connection rules were closer to the top for quicker processing, but there weren't any differences.

Besides that, here is what I've done already (even though some of them don't really apply to my configuration, but I gave it a try):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326040
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905179
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900926/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839510
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;927695
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191143

It seems that when the number of sessions on ISA 2006 reach around 200 the situation gets worse.  So I'm in the process of uninstalling the MS Firewall client on the PC's since we weren't using it for anything specific.  I've a few more to uninstall, but am still experiencing continuously slow and concurrent connection problems.

Thanks,
lkesting

What is the Up/Down speed of your connection? Do you have cache enabled?

Could you post an ipconfig /all from the server aswell please. Also have you setup a connection verfier for the web connection ? is this returning a slow connection warning?

Regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

The downlink is supposed to be 8MB, but telecom had to reduce it to 6MB for line quality reasons.  The uplink is supposed to be 512kb.  In reality my tests show numbers closer to 4.5MB and 315kb.

Yes I'm using the cache.  I have been receiving some write errors and now increased it to 500M.

I've several connection verifiers set up - to the ISP, Google, Yahoo, etc.  I get several slow and disconnection warnings to all of these throughout the day - they show up at different times and do not occur together at the same time.  These will show up even during the night when no one is at the school using the Internet.  The ISP people are supposed to be here next week to discuss this, but I'm not convinced its just a line problem.

Here's my ipconfig /all:

I would personally say that one single DSL line with 6mb down is not enough bandwith for 200 users.

I personally would consider looking at a dual wan option and setup network load balancing on 2 DSL lines. The problems with the slow conectivity is that DSL lnes can be very tempremantal. And speed is usually dependent upon local factors and not your own equipment such as contention and other users of the same ISP locally.

Who is your current ISP?

Thanks for this suggestion, and that's we have finally concluded here too.  Our ISP (local telecom) have provided several proposals that we will follow up on.  Thanks again.
