Start\Run, type gpedit.msc
(this will open local security policy for this computer only, and all setting done here will apply to this computer only - in this case - server).
Go to ComputerConfiguration\Admi
Here you have two options, first is to disable windows messanger, and secon one is to disable automatic start of windows messagner when windows start.
If you have domain, and if you wanna to disable messanger on more then one computer, then do the same in group policy, it's simple.
If you wanna that user who log on some computer can't run windows messanger, open gpedit.msc on this computer, point to UserConfiguration\Administ
Add "msmsgs.exe" any any logged user on this server will have popup that administrator has restricted access to this program :)
You can handle that by a GP and the options within the Group Policy to
either allow Messenger to work or even load as far as that goes.
Open Server Management and then Drill down to Advanced Management and then Group Policy Management and then Domains and then Your Domain Name and then Group Policy
Objects and then right click on Small Business Server Client Computer and
then Edit.
This will open the Policy Editor and under Computer Configuration and then Windows Components and then Windows Messenger you have 2 options there to turn off Messenger for running and or loading initially.
Also in this Policy there is a place to not allow certain Applications to run. Just add the exe for Yahoo here and this will block that from running also. This works on 2000 Pro Workstations and above.
IF you only want to disable Windows Messenger on a few servers, you can do this from MSCONFIG.
Type msconfig in the Run box, goto the Startup tab page and untick the box next to "msmsgs". You will need to restart the server to activate your new configuration.
By doing this Messenger will NOT run on startup and you can simply re-activate it again by ticking the box.
