Configure ISA 2006 as a web proxy

I am new to ISA Server 2006 and have currently installed it into a test environment.  I initially would like to set it up as a web proxy.  I have installed the server, but have not done any customized configurations.  My knowledge of this server is next to nothing, so I would appreciate any pointers (perhaps to configuration documentation) you may have.  As mentioned before, I just want to set it up as a proxy first (I'll tinker with the firewall later).  Please let me know if the question is too broad, and I will try to split it into additional questions.  Thank you!

Morning Chris, your question is fine.

I would suggest that you start with the Microsoft Forefront security site. This covers off exactly where the ISA Server and the associated other components are going. From here you can download the test kits - one of the two test environments is for ISA2006. If you installed this using the freely available Virtual PC 2007, you will be able to see the approach both for the firewall and Proxy aspects in a real configuration.

The Microsoft Press ISA2004 is agood book to get hold of (I know you are looking at 2006 but this book was never written, 2006 is too similar in the base concepts to make it worthwhile. However, 2006 has many additional wizards for automated deployments.) The 2004 book though has tutorials, an explanation on the proccesses and lessons you can follow for the core activities/requirements etc.

There are a number of user groups & forums dedicated to the ISA server environment. Here obviously, www.isaserver.org, www.isatools.org, http://forums.microsoft.com/ForeFront/default.aspx?ForumGroupID=384&SiteID=41, etc. Some give tips & tricks, some give guidance sheets and some are other forums like this.

If you are setting it up as a "web proxy" please be aware that the initial installation of ISA is fairly locked down.

Your initial rule to allow web browsing through ISA should look something like:

Allow > HTTP/HTTPS > Internal > External > All users (or Authenticate users if you wish)

You should also look into the differences between "SecureNat", Webproxy, and Firewall Clients and get at least a basic understanding of how these are different.
