Question

ISA 2006 Internet usage monitoring

Asked by: TomMonkey

Hello,

Does anyone know of a good way to monitor what web pages users are looking at and when?  I have tried looking through the ISA 2006 logs and using Internet Access Monitor.  I don't seem to get anything useful from the output though.  All internal domain users show up as Unknown, only remote users names are resolved.  Also it does not show the pages they are looking at, just IP addresses.

Have I not set up ISA properly?  Could this be a DNS issue?

Cheers

Tom

ISA doesn't work too well at actually monitoring what's going on. There are tons of tools you can buy that work with ISA to assist you in monitoring and blocking web sites. I've worked with SmartFilter in the past and really liked it. They have a Try option on their site. I say download it and give it a run through. The old version wasn't a real easy install, but they had plenty of info on their site to help.

Thanks aubertmr,

I've downloaded a trial version.  Haven't got it to work yet but it looks like it should be able to do the job.  Could be a bit over the top as it looks like it is used for blocking websites too.

Cheers
Tom

Yea, it's mainly used for blocking sites, but offers a great web based tracking tool to. You can view usage based on username or the site or the category that the sites belong to. You don't have to block the sites, you can keep it open and just view the stats. I'm honestly not to sure how much it costs either. We had the software when I got here.

I do seem to be having some trouble getting it installed though and  I can't find anything useful in the whitepapers or on the website.

I've installed the admin console and then the plug ins but they are not showing anything in the SmartReporter.  It seems that it is still waiting to download the database.  Maybe I should just wait overnight...

Yea, you have to get that database downloaded. Make sure you have FTP open for you ISA server or it'll never download. Also, there is a service that needs to be running. There are some documents on installing and administrating SmartFilter on the left side of this page.

The reason it shows up as anonymous is because you most likely have the internet access rule group set to 'all users' that way any web requests passed via isa havnt been authenticated and are not showing their originating user.

My own personal recommendation would be GFI WebMonitor, it may not be the cheapest option but if its to monitor a large user group then its well worth it.

If its more of a small/medium sized business then I would recommend Web Sense Express for SMB

Either way I would advise you to take a good look over the features offered, if you could provide more information with regards to the network size, amount of users to be monitored etc, I could provide more specific recommendations :)

Regards
Steve

aubertmr:

I spoke to a sale rep last week and he suggested that the product might be a big large scale for us.  He recommended a SnapGear 'SG560-12' with bundled Security Reporter.  Sounds good but might be a bit too expensive for the bosses.

Steve:

We have about 40 users connected to the internet through an ISA server, a Junper SSG and a 10 Mbps connection.  You mentioned Authenticated users in ISA.  You are right the internet access rule is set to All Users.  I tried changing it to authenticated users but it started blocking everyone.  Do you know how I make the users authenticate please?  I looked at the internal network properties and it is set to integrated authentication.

Cheers
Tom

I know this is probably too late, i have about the same network as you have, but all using a cable modem to access the outside world.  I use the ISA client firewall for the authentication passthru.  You have to install it on each machine and it uses teh Logged in Users credentials and passes that to ISA to allow the access.  If they aren't logged in with AD accounts properly, they go nowhere.
