How to configure ISA Server 2006 After installation?

Hi

Here is what I have
    a).  A Domain Controller with DNS and AD installed IP (192.168.0.11)
    b).  ISA Server 2006 Installed (192.168.0.10)
    c).  Windows XP SP2 (192.168.0.12)

Few minutes after installing ISA Server 2006 I started having the following error message.  Though I didn't change any of the ISA default settings.

"domainX is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission."

I can ping all machines from the ISA Server and can't ping the ISA Server from other machines.

What to do?

nslookup from Windows XP machine

Hi there

Not to panic this is just ISA's default configuration. It locks down out of the box and its your job to open up the things you require. The reason you cant ping is is because its default config is setup to block ping requests.

You need to enable certain system policy rules in order to open these up.

These can be found by Opening up ISA Server Managment>Firewall Policy>Tasks (Right hand side toolbar)>Show System Policy(Under Policy Editing Tasks)

For additional info on what policies to enable per your setup refer to the following google book and search for system policy think its about page 170

If you have ever worked with ISA. which policy rules are to be define in order to open the network to access resources like Exchange Server 2003, MS SharePoint 3.0 and other computers on the domain?

Hi,
I created an Access Rule with the following settigns:

Rule Name:           Access Rule
Action:                  Allow
Protocols:             All outbounds traffic
From:                    Internal/Local Host
To:                        Internal/Local Host
Users:                  All Users
Schedule:             Always
Content Type:       All content types

"domainX is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission."

That rule will not give any access outside ISA, also i would recommend setting up several rules for specific protocols and not just all outbound traffic

As such a internet access rule would be as follows.

Rule Name:           Web Access
Action:                  Allow
Protocols:             HTTP, HTTPS (FTP if required)
From:                    Internal
To:                        External
Users:                   All Users or Authenicated Users if you want to use authentication

That being said you will require similar rules for other protocols depending upon requirments. ie dns from "SERVER" to external etc.. and also use the publishing wizards to publish any mail server you have

I have enabled certain system policies like the DNS, NTP, DHCP and still having the error message

I can access the network from other machines.
What am I missing to configure in the System Policy?

You need to make sure that rule #1 is enabled in order to authenticate from ISA.

Thanks for the reply. Rule #1 is all enable. I have also enabled the ICMP(ping) and added the computers to ping to the server.

Am still not seeing the ISA Server name in the My Network places but I can access it through Start->Run and typed \\ISA Server name. or IP Address.

What am sure of working is the Ping, also Machines that are now withing the IP Address range are not accessible.

Am still going through the Policies.

HI there

Have you added your computer to the remote managment computers group?

There is already a built in system policy that allows remote access to the ISA server. What you need to do is add the required computers you wish to manage from, to the "Remote Managment Computers" Group.

Open up ISA Server Managment>Firewall Policy>Tasks (Right hand side toolbar)>Show System Policy(Under Policy Editing Tasks)

Enable system policy rule #3 "Allow remote managment from the selected computers using remote mangement"
Right click the "Remote Managment Computers" Group & select properties
Then add the computers you wish to connect from.
