Question

How to configure Exchange and iPhone to connect with each other

Asked by: globeturbo

I am running an Exchange server as part of an SBS Premium R2 environment.  We have recently bought a few iPhones within the company and I have been unable to get the iPhones to connect to the Exchange Server.  I have enabled IMAP4 on exchange and allowed it through the ISA firewall, but still can't get the phones to connect.  I think it could be a problem with the way I am configuring the phone settings, and have found a couple different ways in different places.  Can anyone tell me EXACTLY what I need to do in order to get this to work?

You may need some form of token sacrifice - Apple usually is okay with livestock.

Seriously though - I'll be watching this one since I'd like to know if someone has managed to get the stars to align on this one.

Good luck!

Hi.

I have the iPhone imap synced with Ex2007.  2003 should be similiar setup (just in a different manner).

By default, the iPhone connects IMAP secure and SMTP secure.  So you will need tcp ports 993 (imap secure) and 587 (smtp secure) redirected/opened on your firewall to your server.  You also need to setup your server to operate securely on these protocols which requires a certificate.  The iPhone will accept "invalid" certificates (unlike windows mobile without adding the root cert), so you can setup a certificate authority and make a cert for this purpose.  The setup method is explained pretty well below:

http://www.isaserver.org/img/upl/exchangekit/2003secureimap4/2003secureimap4.htm

If you dont want to setup securely, you must tell the iPhone to continue even though the test failed, go into the advanced options at the bottom of the email settings and turn off SSL on both imap and smtp.  You should also have tcp ports 143 and 25 (smtp is already im sure) open on the firewall.

The ISA Server configuration examples didn't look like my ISA Server in SBS 2003.  I think they  must have been from a full blown ISA Server.  I had to change the way I configured it, but the general concepts presented were good.  He also didn't go into how to set up the phone, but once I got it through ISA it was rather straight forward.
