Question

How to monitor traffic for Proxy bypasser

Asked by: oneyg

Hi Experts,

I am managing a medium sized network and I use proxy to block and allow clients to go to the Internet. I have set some policies on the proxy (ISA server 2007) according to Company's regulations. But there are some users who are using free proxy's to surf the sites that are blocked by my proxy.  How can I detect such traffic and how do I stop it without blocking the IP address?

so when your saying they are using free proxies, you mean they are using anonymizer and other similar web sites i assume ?

The only thing you can do there is block those sites too!

@Hayes,

Thanks, I tried that but they keep comming up with new ones everyday. What I was trying to find out here is how can I identify such traffic on my monitoring softwares, because for sure I can't catch them on my proxy.
If I get to find the IP address that does that, is there a way I can trace the the bandwidth utilization and see the traffic (websites visited) by using the IP address?

web catergorisation software  normally contains lists of these sites which you can then block - but, yes, if you dont have that, you may be blocking a lot of sites over a long time...

since all the traffic is being routed via the external anonymous proxy - you should be able to track bandwidth usage just by running a report for that anonymizer style site.

Either way, your going to need to build a list of those sites - either to track, or to block - or purchase software to do categorisation for you - which can then track or block.

Use OpenDNS (www.opendns.com).

Employee firings helps a lot too.  If management will not keep their humans under control then the war is over and you lost,...so just let them do whatever they want.  Employees who do this are blantantly  bypassing company security policies,...if management won't deal with that directly then you are wasting your time in the long run.

Thanks for your contributions guys. You are both correct at certain perspective.

I believe OpenDNS has a catagory to block the public proxys at the DNS resolution level.
