Question

Blocking Skype on ISA 2004

Asked by: moh10ly

Hi everyone

I've tried looking around on google to find the signature of skype in order to block it. but I wasn't successful.
I'm not sure if i can do that also by blocking ports that skype use as I read that skype uses HTTP & https ports which can't be blocked.

Is there any work around to block it ?
Thanks

1. Remove the users from being local Administrators.  Now they cannot install or reinstall Skype

2. Remove Skype from their machines.  They can't use what they don't have.

3. Block all traffic to the IP Ranged owned by Skype.  If it can't "talk to momma" it will either not work or will at least be crippled enough to not be very useful to the people trying to use it.  You're wasting your time with Domain Sets or URL Sets.  This will also make it difficult for them to go to the site to even download it to install it.

Hi Pwindell.

I think i already choose to go with the port block... I can uninstall skype on their local machines but due to the time will take me to create new users for each machine and moving their documents from the current local user account to the new one.. note that some users has the account "Administrator" as their local account.

I'd rather do it the quicker way with less effort... i'm not sure whats the port range of skype?

You don't create new users,...you just remove their account from the Administrators group.
You can even to that with GPO using the Restricted Groups feature,..although I don't have the steps for that.  GPO can even restrict them from executing the Skype executable using the Software Restrictions policies.

I don't block ports with Skype,...I bock the Domain "skype.com" and the IP Ranges that they own.

Any particular reason my comment was not accepted?  My very first post (in step #3) already told you to do the same thing that the link in the "Accepted Solution" stated doing.  In fact I gave more detail and more other things that need to accompany the step to make the "block" more secure.
