asked on

explorer caused error in shell32.dll.

If I choose okay, system tray dumps a few icons and error message returns.  I cannot choose to restart or shutdown without cutting power.  It does not save config changes.  I have rerun Windows ME setup but problem persists.  I did clean install option of Zone Alarm upgrade.  I get same problem in Safe Mode. In line-by-line confirmation, I did get one message about invalid VxD dynamic link to device 28, service 74 - Windows config is invalid. Run window setup again.  I downloaded and installed Tweakui but when I asked it to repair system files, it said I needed to restart my computer (which started and then died so I had to turn off and start over).  I'm out of things to do and know nothing - please help.

Test the RAM

NOTE if this doesn't find anything wrong with the RAM this DOESN'T mean the RAM is good you would need to swap out the RAM with known good modules for testing. However if it does find something wrong then chances are the RAM is bad.

Hi galarson.

Did you do an upgrade from Windows 95/98 to Windows ME?

The problem may be caused by this.
To roll back to your previous working state:

This will help you get your computer back to its last best state before all these problems.

Boyrage - I did originally upgrade from Windows 98, but it was probably two years ago.  I would love to use system restore but there were no restore points I could get to the way my system was acting. The restore program would not move to earlier time. I have run Windows ME setup a couple of times since the error started, with no luck except now I can at least run my tax program and stay in business.  Why do you ask about the upgrade?  I have always noticed a problem running things like defrag and thorough scan disk.  Something keep writing to disk and restarting the tool.  All I have installed lately is an Earthlink Total Access upgrade (ISP), my tax prep software from Drake
Run scandisk and defrag in safe mode
Have you tested the drive and RAM yet?
you can restore the regestory to a  previous state  even though you have rerun windows and no restore points
bootup with a winme startup disk  and at the A:prompt switch to C:   and type C:\scanreg/restore       there should be a reg date of at least a week back
note if it shows as a bad command then cd into C:\windows\command and type C:\windows\command\scanreg/restore
I sent Microsoft my DrWatson file and rep told me to clear Media Manager stop index button, although it wasn't showing as available option.  When I did this, the error went away, and so did Windows Explorer.  Now my Taskbar and Start Menu are behaving badly with one lockup already....make that two.  I also died in Helpcenter - kernel32.
