Using VNC over the internet

I have some internet penpals that reported me about problems they have in their
computers.
I want to help them by using the virtual network VNC program.
Can i use this software in order to connect to their coputyers ? )of course upon their agreement) or is it only for LAN usage.
Do they have to install this program as well ? and how should they configure it ?

Yes they have to install it and no it isn't just for LAN usuage. You can dial in to the machine remotely.
If this is the one you are interested in this link will help you out

or this one

http://www.tightvnc.com/
Get TightVNC, it can be accessed over the web as a class I believe.  YOu don't need to have it installed on your system to use it.  You can open up port 5800 and jsut use ur ip address ie. http://24.100.144.234:5800 to access it.

Chris
each pc will need the vnc server software, you will need the vnc client.  if they have routers you need to open ports 5800,5801,5900 and point to the box that has the vnc server software installed on your friends pc.
you can user the vnc viewer or a browser
for the browser type in the address bar  the ipaddress:5800 (example 65.25.212.32:5800)
remember you will need your friends external ip address
have then do ip config if no router or have then connect to their router and tell you the ip.
