How do I increase the screen resolution

we have a laptop that only states the following screen resolution options.
1024 x 768 and 800 x 600
How can I provide my user with the fullest options?

Right-click the Desktop/Properties
From the Settings tab, click Advanced
Deselect "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" (from the Monitor tab)- click OK
Now, you can try adjusting it - but it may not work for you - my laptop won't provide higher resolutions unless I put an external monitor on it...just depends on the hardware...
...or if it works - you'll get that 'funny' display where you have to scroll right and left or up and down to see the entire screen (some people might enjoy this - I don't... :D)

The "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" is deselected and it still doesnt work. I am using an external Compaq flat screen monitor
Have you tried upgrading the driver for it?
Upgrading the BIOS may also be necessary.
What laptop/monitor model are you using?

Howdy vigge79,

I've found that the options available in the display properties are the function of the display driver's settings. because of this you might try one of two solutions.

    1. perhaps there is another driver available for your graphic chipset & display
or 2. I'm certain that this is adjustable in the registry; however I havn't located information that would specifically allow you to choose non-standard modes for your hardware. (this could be risky)
    3. you might consider a 3rd party tool that handles display resolution - there are many of them out there. (again setting a non-standard resolution could be a bit risky)

Best Regards
Your laptop is capable of very high resolution, and at the very least, you should be able to get 1280x1024 (native for most LCD displays): http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11344_na/11344_na.HTML

The drivers that originally came with the laptop should have been capable of displaying high resolutions.  Check in device manager if something is not functioning properly in the display driver.
if you're not able to solve the problem, put the question to HP. Both products are HP/Compaq, so they'll be more helpful, I believe. In the meantime, try to check the dual monitor settings on desktop settings.

this is the instant support link:

Also try to download the latest video card driver from the manufacturer site.

on occasion, a driver update will help, but more often you simply need the extra RAM or bios that a newer model VGA card can provide.

Without the basic support hardware, the options for new features (increased resolution) may not be available.

Check out mfr website for more complete info on chipset capabilities

cheers syt for agreeing... it is important that we keep in mind that when we buy a piece of hardware we're also paying the manufacturer to have support available for us ;)

good luck on solving the problem
