why put Ghost on BartPE instead of making a Ghost Bootable disc

The Crashed computer is a laptop... so I'd have to find a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, here in Belarus, I'll look.

What is a ghost boot disk (network or not) ?  I don't see an option in Ghost 9 to make a boot disk.  I have installed Ghost 9 on a working XP desktop I have, but I don't know if this helps. I might be confused.  Can I on the working PC make a disc that boots up and has Ghost 9 on it and then use that disc to boot crashed laptop and back up the data?

David, if you need to recover the data, then you can use the BartPE, its like an XP but boot from CD, I have never use that, but from reference, it should allow networking, so meaning you should be able to 'pull' data off the HDD.

If your HDD is physically damaged, ie. damaged sectors or heads, then Ghost wont be the choice as it will fail while reading the content, its designed for backing up data/image, not for recovery in such case.

I've already created the BartPE and the UBCDforWin, I installed Ghost on my laptop and am copying the C:\ to a file on the c:\ drive, which is sort of ass-backwards I think, I mean, when my system crashes again, how can I restore from the c:\ drive the image, but when I tried copying the image to CD-RWs it just sort of frooze on me, so I'll try this first.

If I have the image copied to my hard disk, what good does it do me if my system crashes?
I wanna change the partitions, but, not till I have a backup

Ghost is used to create the image, and it is not the image itself.  When I want to image a hard drive for backup, I usually just use Ghost and a W98 boot disk.  You create this disk from within Ghost (C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\Ghost Boot Wizard.exe).

IN other words, first you create the Ghost Floppy disk, and if it is not bootable, then just use a W98 boot disk to get to a Command Prompt, then put the Ghost Floppy into the drive and run the ghost.exe file.  This will start Ghost, and it will give you options....  You select the source partition, and then the hard drive which you want to ghost the image to..  Make sure you have these correct, as you don't want to image over your drive which holds the data.  Pretty self expanatory after that..

what version of Ghost are you using, I didn't see that file, I am using Ghost 9.0 found in Norton System Works 2005 Premiere Edition. It says that the installation disc is bootable, but here in Belarus, no discs you buy are what they say they are and this one is no exception, I can't use it to boot into the Restore Environment mentioned in the v.9.0 manual.  What files in v.9.0 would I need on my boot disc, and are they WinXP or Dos files, so I make the appropriate boot disc.

When installed you should find an option to create a DOS boot floppy from which to run Ghost..  Here is a guide to ghosting an image in DOS...

Fatal Exception.   That guide refers to Ghost 2002/2003, is there any way to make a bootable CD (no floppy on laptop) to run Ghost if using version 9.0.  I can't find it if there is.  And when we say bootable CD are we talking about a bootable disc to start Ghost and then you switch in the DVDs that have the image?  Or do we have the image DVDs themselves bootable?

Hmm...  not quite sure where we are heading here...  I do not have the 9.0 version, but there is a good pdf manual that will give you the details on how to use it..  Here is the dnload URL:

This version, by itself, can do everything you probably need..  From its own interface, it will allow you to image your drive onto a CD/DVD, and then you can bring the image back by using Recovery Environment, which is reached by booting using the Norton Ghost CD or the Symantec Recovery Disk CD...

I don't have said CD, and I don't think I can make it, so I will end it at that.  I have read endless amounts on Ghost online, and there seem to be very many unhappy users.  I read the entire 100+ manual, and I don't see how I can make the recovery CD, I have the CD files copied on my computer, but I didn't bring the disc with me, (I'm traveling overseas) so I'm sure I could somehow make this disc, but I don't know how.

if anyone knows that I would appreciate it, else I'll try putting the executable ghost32.exe on the BartPE Boot Disc and use that, I don't think the image I made with Ghost 9.0 will work, with Ghost 2003/8.0 (which is the version that has the boot feature, I can also install that directly if I want as it was on the original disc and thus in my files) so I will have to remake it probably.  Another option I am considering is Acronis True Image 8.0 I also read it's manual 81 pages and a lot more articulate and helpful.  I have read more positive stuff about it as opposed to Ghost.  

Anyway, this thread asked why put Ghost on Bart PE and you've all answered that very well, thank you very much.If you have any idea how to regenerate the Recovery Disc (basically before leaving I put all installation files I had into zips, and onto removable media, to save space.  I copied it back to my laptop and installed Ghost 9.0 fine, but I don't know how to compile (re-compile) the original as a boot disk, if you can help with that thanks, otherwise I understand.
