asked on

any jewelry specialist can help me on this ring?

I bought a ring at a flea market. I do not know the size or the value if it has any. There is a word underneath the stone and from what I can tell with a magnifying glass it says "sterling" . So a sterling silver ring with what looks to be an opal. How would I find out.....without cost.....the size of the ring if I wanted to throw it on Ebay........and whether it is really sterling silver with an opal?
I could walk into the local jewelry store but how to you know they are giving you fair value on something they may want?

Any megalo-jewlery store can appraise it for free or for a couple bucks.

we do not have any magalo jewelry stores in our area. I assume magalo is the name of the store chain.

I'll try the "insurance" thing.

and try more than one shop to get a comparison (as long as they don't charge more than it's worth).
I was just making a joke.

I mean place like J. Fosters, Oesterman's, Kay Jewlers, etc....
BILJAX,, you aren't a king of the hill fan by any chance are you?
Yes I am, however, they will do appraises for "Insurance" purposes.

if this ring is not valuable at all, and even phony, won't I appear an idiot to be asking for appraisals for insurance on a piece of cosmetic jewelry?
I really think the word on the bottom is sterling.....not sure about the opal being real.

hi
it is only about a week old....i thought questions needed to be closed in about 21 days.

I'll close it though
nickg5,

You do have 21 days from the last comment to close your question but you need to remain active in it or this script will ask you for an update (not saying that you necessarily need to close the question if it hasn't been answered). :-)

ok, now I understand. i did not make a comment because I was waiting for more advice.......
and nobody suggested a way to get the ring size which was part of the question too.
A comment to that effect would help you get an answer (I missed that you wanted to know how to find out the size when I looked at this question myself).

I can re-open this question if you wish as you closed it due to a misunderstanding.

turn123,

I missed the bit about the ring size too, but I wonder if rushing the asker to close a question that obviously needed some off-line research may have led to me getting a B grade where perhaps I could have been more helpful?

Questions of this nature cannot be resolved quickly, unlike a tech question where the result can usually be tested overnight.

I do appreciate that chasing and encouraging the closure of unattended questions is a good idea, but perhaps a little human intervention could be used before the robot posts.

Might be better if the question was at least 2 weeks after the last comment before auto-posting.

I agree with RobinD, I feel that we may have rushed-assumed too much too quick to adequately help the asker.

Add me to the list of those who missed the point.

nickg5,

Sorry, just realised that you are still wondering about the size of your ring.

Easily resolved (with a helpful jewellers shop). They all have a tapered stick type of gadget with graduations all down the side. The measurement is simply to place the ring over the stick and read off the size where the ring fits.

If you're trying to match the ring to a finger, they also have a set of various sized marked rings gathered on a key-ring type of thing. Simply place the selected finger into the one that it fits best and there's your answer (or bring in a ring that fits the finger if you want to be a little more secretive about it) This is such a simple operation that I'm sure there would be no charge - they would have to do this anyway if you were to buy a ring from their shop, and if they're helpful this time you may consider buying from them in the future so I'm sure they would want to help.

good luck.
