File names contain invalid characters for the destination.

I am running OSX 10.3 connected to a WIN2000 file server via SMB://

Any file names that contain certain characters, e.g. / or *  are invalid and cannot be placed or saved to the server.

This is a major issue for my company because we have years worth of data that contain these characters within their filenames. We also receive a lot of customer files with these characters in the filenames. e.g. FILE/NAME.tif or FILENAME*.eps

These file names must remain as they were originally named because they are related to other files and applications for placement. e.g. FILE/NAME.tif  relates to an image used within the customer file FILE/NAME.qxd or FILE/NAME.indd

This was not a problem when I used OS9 with a LINUX based server, but we had to upgrade storage capacity, so our IT dept. thought it was best to go with the WIN server. :((  I wanted to get an XSERVER.... but the boss didn't want to spend that much.

If anyone has any ideas or solutions, please do not hesitate to let me know. This is a major emergency.

I will give major points for a solution.

Thanks,

Rob G.
