Mac Airport and Dlink wireless router

I recently bought airport and Dlink Wireless router.  Upon installing airport into my IMac laptop and setting up my Dlink router,  I find that I can not connect to the router by the way of wireless, however I can connect to the DLink routher by physically connect a cat5 wire to the laptop and surf the net.

Is Airport only limited to Apple Extreme base router?

Will Airport work with any router or does it only work with Apple hardware?

if Airport DOES work with any wireless router, how do I configure it so the laptop may surf the net?
