Printer sharing between MAC OSX and Win XP PRO

i have read the help files and spent too much time on this problem: i can not simply see the printer that is connected to my G5 from my PC. i saw a program that allows for 'seamless' networking ( PCMAClan) but im positive i shouldn't need software... Michael Switzer

yes. network connectivity is fine. ::that brought up another question... later:: no problems with file sharing in the least. i have another printer on a windows machine on the same lan. When I 'add/remove' printers, i can see both computers, the appleG5 and the other windows computer. the apple shows no sharing printers where as the windows computer does. this would lead me to believe that my knowledge in MAC language is not good and that the printer is not being shared correctly on the MAC.

Hmm, not postscript but the XP machine should see it. Dunno man. Sounds like youve got the mac set up properly. There arent that many options to change.

i still believe that there is a sharing/permissions issue. The MAC's name is 'APPLEG5' (original eh?) and when i put \\appleg5 in explorer, it brings up a Username/password box. OK.. no biggie, but ive tried every combonation i can think of ( based on windows standards for Usernames and passwords) and i can get into it. weather or not this affects the printer, i would still like to be able to access files on the MAC. hopefull this can shed some light :)

All you should have to do on the Mac is enable printer sharing. The rest of the process takes place on the PC.

Have you tried entering the username/password of the Mac? It is trying to authenticate against the
macintosh.

Here are a couple of other possibilities you might try:

1) Use IPP printing rather than SMB. Configure the Windows computer to print to the mac using IPP (or Internet Printing).

2) Download and install Rendezvous for Windows, so the windows machine can see the Mac's natively exported printer:

1. try 'ping APPLEG5'. If it replies, then no problem with name resolution.
2. try 'net use \\APPLEG5\<printer name> <password> /USER:<username>' from command com.

or

try 'net use \\<ipaddress of APPLEG5\<printer name> <password> /USER:<username>' if APPLEG5 can't resolve to an ip address.

p/s :
I stumbled into this printer connection problem in Windows. Not with Macs, but between Windows. For some strange reason, it'll the shares on the client will just dissapears, and will not connect anymore. I don't have much time to find out why, but this 'net use' will do the trick to reconnect to the printer everytime the computer boot (I create a batch file that contain that net use line, and put it in "start up program"). Quick and dirty solution.

OK. I set a password on the account on the MAC and it allowed me to see 'my documents' of apple. This is nice but It still hasn't helped the printer problem.

brettmjohnson: I downloaded Rendezvous and it cant see the printer....im boggled. any thing small that i may be overlooking? keep in mind that network connectivity is not a problem.
