powerbook g4 airport card to 2wire wireless

Tearing my hair out trying to get my wife's g4 powerbook w/a recently installed external "original" airport card to see our 2wire router (homeportal 1800hg).  I point the airport admin utility at the router address (10.0.0.1) and type in the password (preceded by $) and NO LUCK!  All I get is:

"The Airport Admin Utility was unable to read the configuration of the selected base station."
