The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Mac OS 10.3 clients cannot see windows created files through afp

Asked by Arizant in Apple Networking, Appletalk

We have two Mac computers running OS 10.3 with the latest updates.  We recently upgraded our file server from Windows 2000 to Windows server 2003 (new box with new OS).  We were going to have the Macs connect to the new file server using SMB (they were using afp).  However we found that Quark files did not work correctly through SMB (they show up on the server as Unix executable files).  So, I decided to create a Mac Share on the new server using File Services for Macintosh (we had this setup on the old Windows 2000 file server).  They can connect just fine using afp, however, they cannot see any Windows created files or folders on the share.  If I connect using SMB, they can see everything.  I would like to know if I am missed a step when I setup the Mac Share on the new server.  On the old file server, they could see Windows created files just fine when connecting through afp.  This is how I setup the Mac share:

1.  Installed File Services for Macintosh on the new Windows Server 2003 file server
2.  Created a new share.
3.  During the share creation selected Apple Mac Users and gave a share name for them.

Should I have created this share differently?  Since on the old server, the Mac users could see windows created files just fine using afp, I am assuming this issue on the new server is related to how I setup the share.  I just don't know what I should have done differently.  Start Free Trial
