The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Connect OS X 10.4 clients to a Windows SBS 2003 server doesn't work

Hi,

I have 2 Macintoshes- a Mini and an Intel iMac- and a network with a 4 pcs and an SBS 2003 server sitting like a malaevolent spider in the middle of it. I want the Macs to connect to shares on the server.

I've followed the instructions I've found at various places and indeed had one fleeting moment of success when the Mini finally connected using Finder-Go-Connect to Server. Once was all it was though, since then I'm back to getting the truly irritating "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" message. What makes it more annoying (as if that were even possible) is that the SMB logon dialog box doesn't appear so where it's getting the user name and password from is a complete mystery to me.

The one time it worked, the dialog box popped up. After that I've never seen it again.

I've set up a GPO on the server to disable "digitally sign communications", I've resolved the .local problem (easy in 10.4). I can ping the server using the various domain name and netbios server name combinations.

The iMac is brand new, just out of the box and has had no other networking software installed on it. I tried AdMitMac on the MacMini but came to the conclusion that it was unneccessary. I can see the XP clients from the iMac.

Please don't assume that I know anything about either Macs or Windows SBS 2003 (except that I hate it). Thanks in advance and any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.
