The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

I have a Mac running OS X that keeps losing a mapped drive from a Windows 2003 server. I can map the drive and after about 10 minutes it goes away. Any ideas?

How are you "mapping" the Win 2003 drive?
Are you on a wired network or wireless?
By going away, do you mean that it disappears from the Desktop and you get an alert box indicating it has disconnected?
Is the Windows Folder and AppleShare or a Windows volume accessed via SMB?
Also can you indicate waht version of OSX you are running?

I am mapping the drive by going to connect to server and using smb://ipaddress/share and this works on our other Macs running the same OS version
I am on a wired network
It disappears from the desktop after 10-15 minutes but does not give a warning or error message
It is a Windows volume accessed via SMB
It is the latest OS X release so 10.4.7

First a couple of caveats ...
1. If the Windows Volume is always-on then you can consider a "persistent" link. Otherwise I'd go with an "automount" .. which means it connects as is required but the mac will not hang if you server restarts.

I am on a wireless network and find the "automount" is better .. anyway here goes..

The slow way is to use the NetInfo Manager ..
It is very well explained here ... http://www.bombich.com/mactips/automount.html
The only difference is that you need to use the smb protocol rather than the afp one .. the "opts" property should read
(net, url==smb://username:password@SERVERNAME/SHAREFOLDERNAME)

A quick and handy tool for doing most of the work is a little application called Sharepoints Automounter - http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/ .. it works like a treat.

Now you have the Windows server always accessible in your Network/Servers/ directory .. it will connect on demand... if you want you can create an alias to the mounted server anywhere .. this will automount the volume ... you can even place an Alias in your Login Items in Accounts: System Preferences to have it login on Startup

If this works .. let me know.

The Windows Volume is always on because it is our file server/domain controller. How would I setup a persistent link to the volume and have it not disconnect? I have our other Mac's connected and they only lose the connection at night. i am a real noob when it comes to Macs on a Windows network =)

OK ... did you try the automount  option listed above? It should work and behave like an attached network drive. It doesn't DISCONNECT, it just stops polling the shared folder on the server until you try and perform an action on the remote server.  This delay is usually just a delay of a couple of seconds... Windows does the same. If you create an automount and it still drops mysteriously .. read on ..

If your windows server is a domain controller etc. then there may be minor issues with DNS suffix resolution that may cause the mac to fail or drop connections .. the issue you've been having perhaps. Are you running Win 2000 or 2003 server?

Try this ..

1. From the Mac .. PING the IP of the server ..I assume this works fine.
2. From the Mac, PING the server by its name .. if it fails then the Domain is not resolving properly

To sort this out .. on the Mac open Applications->Utilities->Directory Access.app
Check that the SMB/CIFS service is enabled
Configure it ... and enter the workgroup and WINS Server IP
Under Applications->System Preferences->Networking
beneath the DNS server: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
There is a field called Search Domains. If it is empty .. or contains only IPs
Fill in Server_name.com

Then log Off and log On again .. repeat step 2 above and see does it work now.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANOTHER OPTION

In OSX10.4 there's an application called Automator .. this has some in-built scripts ..
Create a New Workflow
Using the "Get Specified Servers" action to pass all your server URLS to the "Connect to Servers" action.
Save the Workflow and test it.  If it works OK .. Save As .. and create an Application.
Now put this Application somewhere like your Applications folder
Add the application to login items under System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items .... so that it reconnect at startup or login.
For convenience you can also drag it to the left pane in finder. That way if any server links become disconnected unexpectedly, it will reattach from any finder window.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
££$$ OPTIONS
A commercial product called Sharity is apparently a bit more stable/powerful than the SAMBA smbmount functionality built into OSX .. you might want to have a look & trial it .. http://www.obdev.at/products/sharity/index.html

For non-domain windows mounts .. you can have a look at this little application .. Mount Watcher http://www.scriptsoftware.com/mountwatcher

I am also attempting to map a network drive on a MAC OS X Version 10.4.10  and I get to the point (SMB/CIFS File System Authentication) where it ask for the workgroup or domain, name, and password, then there is where it fails.  I know for a fact that the username and password are correct but cannon figure out why the server is rejecting it.  - ANY assistance is appreciated.  -AA
