Confused about server/local side Apache/PHP/MySql

Hello!

  Can someone please explain to me the difference between having Apache/PHP/MySql installed on my Mac and my server (through cpanel)? I am getting really confused. I keep reading documents where I have to either install Apache, or that it's already installed on my Mac - I did find out it already is. Also, with PHP, do I have to install that on my Mac? According to my server space I already have version 2.11.6 installed. AND with mySQL I've read instructions on how to install on my comp, but then I went to my cpanel and it it had a mySQL option where I just easily created a database.

Do I have to have all of this installed on my comp and my server space?
