"A Network Cable Is Unplugged" but it's not

I am using Windows XP and I am receiving a blinking error message that says Local Area Connection, A Network Cable is Unplugged.  I have a cable modem plugged into the ethernet port.  The ethernet card came with my motherboard which is an Amptron Socket A M825 series.  I am positive all connections are secure but I cannot get the error message to quit blinking.  My power and cable lights stay lit on my modem but my pc light does nothing and I cannot connect to the internet via cable.  I know this problem can be fixed because someone has fixed it before just several days ago for me.  However, he is not available to come over or to get in contact with.  My question would be, how do I re-establish connection and get the "network cable is unplugged" message to stop constantly blinking?

cap --> not likely.  on AMD boards when the power supply is failing to give enough power, usually the system would freeze, rather than have components flake out.

dustinyoung --> to make sure it ain't the power supply -- what type of video card are you using?  some video cards take more juice than others and that might contribute to the power supply problem if it even is one

Hi,

You said: "My power and cable lights stay lit on my modem but my pc light does nothing and I cannot connect to the internet via cable"

I think its rather unlikely that its your power supply.  I would suggest first that you unplug and re-plug in your network wires.

Then turn the PC off and unplug the modem.  Count to 10 and plug the modem back in, and then turn the PC on and tell me what happens with the lights.

After this, I'm going to want to have you go to a DOS prompt and run IPCONFIG /ALL and let me know the results.

standsolid, it IS likely, because it happened to me 3 months ago, with an AMD XP1600. That is how I know about this. I had my computer in two different shops after the cable company made a visit to the house and said the cable and modem were fine, and neither could fix this problem. Then, I went to a third computer shop, who tested the power supply, and lo and behold, they found the voltage regulation had gone flip. They replaced the p/s and the connection message has not blinked one time since, and absolutely nothing was changed in the PC configuration. New power supply = no problem.
Generally, when we trouble shoot a PC, we eliminate the most likely things first.  My experience is that power suppies do on rare occasions go bad, but that its an unlikely senario.  If a power supply goes bad, usually the result is that the computer crashes - or won't start at all.  I have never ever heard of a network card not running because of a bad power supply...

A much more likely senario, is a wiring problem because we can see that there is no light indicating a connection on the modem.  Or the lack of a device driver on the PC side.

Can I ask you to do what I've suggested above and come back to me, it costs nothing and its an easy test to do.  When you've re-started the PC, goto a DOS prompt and ENTER IPCONFIG /ALL and post the results here.

cap -->  Yes, i too had a probelm w/ power supply/nic card and replacing the power supply with a larger capacity one worked wonders.  I'm saying don't go running out to buy a $60 supply to plug it in and have it not work.  it could be the nic chipset on the mobo.
To solve the power supply argument go out and buy a power supply tester.  This is a very inexpensive tool that anyone who values thier equipment should have.
IT could be the cable between your ethernet port on your modem, or the ethernet port itself. I would try a new cable. If the cable appears to be good you might try hooking the modem up to another computer, if you have on available. Also I would try a standard loopback test ping on your ethernet card. Go to start-run-type cmd then press enter. When you get the dos prompt type:

ping localhost

If you get 4 good responses then your card is most likely okay. If you get requst timed out, you could have a bad card, or you may need to reinstall your networking components.

i too have similar problem, two XP MACHINE wanna connect using cross over cable, 100 % sure about cable. but still message appears "Local Area Connection  Network cable unplugged"
i have problem with two XP MACHINE  connect using cross over cable, 100 % sure about cable. but still message appears "Local Area Connection  Network cable unplugged" please help
I have the same problem with a TWIST.  Whenever I go to EBAY and look at listings.  Frequently when I click on a listing to look at the details I get the "A network cable is unplugged" message, and my two computers (which are on a home network) get disconnected from the Internet.  After I close the Explorer 6.0 browser, my connection usually comes back up in about 30 seconds.

I changed all cables.
I tried changing the config of the Local Area Connection (which gets disconnected).

I have for some time suspected that this error may be the result of some type of worm which is associated with the EBAY phishing scam... but after upgrading to McAfee 6.0 and trying a variety of anti-virus/anti-worm scanners, I have not been able to resolve the problem.

Any idea, what it is about an Ebay listing that would cause my Local Area Connection to disconnect???

THANKS FOR ANY RESPONSE!
My DSL connection stopped about one week ago in computer #1.  In checking properties of my LAN bytes were being sent but not received.  The connection icon had yellow circles and stated that IP address could not be found as well as limited to no connectivity.  The windows connection wizard would not allow me to start a new connection.  I switched the modem to computer #2 and it worked fine for about 10 days and the same thing is happening.  Could my modem be dead?  Is my ethernet cable damaged?  One technician stated that a virus may be causing this problem.  I have Norton utilities installed on both my computers.  Any thoughts?
