Windows 98 first edition has alot of problems with USB...Microsoft released a patch for it but it isnt too great....I would recomend going to an ethernet modem instead of USB
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have a problem trying to use an adsl USB modem with Windows 98 (first
edition). The modem and dsl line work fine with another PC running Win
2000. It's not a hardware problem because the modem won't work on either
of two PCs running Win98, showing exactly the same error.
It gets as far as 'dialling' the adsl connection and trying to log in,
displays "verifying user name and password" then presents error 650, "the computer you are connecting to does not respond to a network request". I've tried updating to DUN 1.4 with no effect. I've heard it might be some problem with Windows 98 and USB devices, or something to do with USB NDIS support in 98 but where to start, I don't know. Any pointers?
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

yeah plus if u have old school 1.1 usb, it will be slower, and you wont be able to get the speed you should out of it..
Win98 has tons o problems w/ all USB modems. like grind said, win98 doesnt do a whole lot for usb - even patched
Ask for 1 that has an rj45 port on it, then go get a pci nic and save yourself tons of trouble (old ISA nics often have conflicts)
usb and 98 do pose problems at times. do you have any other usb devices working?if yes then its possible its not a usb port issue.sometimes old bios settings disable usb altogether and you cant use usb at all.make sure no static ip addresses are in any places they shouldnt be this can cause conflicts. funny though usually ive found if the user name and password are being authenticated its usually seing the server. hard to say
